Thursday’s Valiant Effort: March 6, 2014

Valiant Effort

Two more months to Free Comic Book Day and this summer’s big event, Armor Hunters kicks off from Valiant Comics. Some really cool news about that came out this week. Before you get that, though, I am going to start you off in Thursday’s Valiant Effort with our two reviews for this week and then throw some awesome news and art your way.

Thursday's Valiant EffortQuantum and Woody: Goat #0 – You have to wonder about a goat with above average intelligence and laser beam eyes. Wonder no longer as this issue unveils the mysterious past of one the best characters in Quantum and Woody… Goat. This is an amazing ride brought to you by James Asmus and Tom Folwer. The goat first shows up in Quantum and Woody’s life as Quantum’s father and Doctor Platzhalter are working on a new piece of equipment called “The Brain Trust”, a machine that will transfer consciousness and repurpose the human brain. Through a mixed up chain of events, their father is killed and they end up with the goat, but I won’t ruin the big reveal, because this comic was really just too good. In fact, I loved the idea that the goat was really more intelligent than other goats before anything else happened to him. This is a touching tale that, I feel, can set the stage for some really interesting discussions later in the series. I recommend this book to any fans of the series as it completes parts of the puzzle that have just been a little fuzzy up till now.

Thursday's Valiant EffortArcher & Armstrong #18 – Kicking off a new crossover event between Archer & Armstrong and Bloodshot and H.A.R.D. Corps,  this is the first issue of “Mission: Improbable” brought to you by the team of Fred Van Lente and Pere Perez. This series has seen its share of action, intrigue, and adventure in the past, but this issue tops all the rest. Project Rising Spirit sends Bloodshot out to capture Archer, dead or alive, while the rest of H.A.R.D. Corps is to watch and detain Armstrong… with beer. Obie proves his chops fighting toe to toe with the indestructible killing machine. The blood, the bullets, the kung fu, and the doves… I thought I was in a John Woo movie. I am not going to spoil a bit of this one, because you should be reading it.

Finally, this week, Valiant has released covers for all the first issues of the new crossover event of the summer, Armor Hunters. This looks like a great series and crosses X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Unity, Bloodshot and H.A.R.D. Corps, and the main Armor Hunter series. Not only is the artwork amazing for these covers, they are also going to be chromium covers. That will be sharp looking. This will be something new for Valiant, as they have kept things tame since their return to the comics scene a couple of years ago. This summer will be big, so remember, Read Valiant First!
