Fall Television Preview: American Horror Story

American Horror Story: Freak Show

The freaks come out to play tonight on FX. American Horror Story returns for a fourth season with a 90-minute introduction to the cast of this year’s show, subtitled Freak Show.

Fans of the show know that the premise is simple. Each year the show is based on different characters and a different horror-themed story. The first season centered around a house in Los Angeles that had been host to multiple murders. The second season came with the subtitle Asylum. The focus was around an asylum in the 1950’s. Last season focused on a brood of witches in a year named Coven. Now, the same writers that bring Fox’s Glee to life every week bring you American Horror Story: Freak Show.

The cast is an ensemble of new faces mixed with the returning actors. Think of the show as a throwback to the playhouse days. Same actors, different roles, different shows. Jessica Lange is set to headline the group of freaks this season. Patti LaBelle, Matt Boner, Skyler Samuels and Neil Patrick Harris have all been rumored for guest roles that will play pivotal plot roles.

Freak Show will center around one of the last sideshow style carnivals in the country.  It will take place in Florida in the early 1950’s. It will also break a major trend for American Horror Story fans, it will feature the return of a previously aired character. Pepper, played by Naomi Grossman, was a patient at Briarcliff Asylum in the second season of the show. While she was locked up for a grotesque murder of her niece, it was revealed eventually that she was framed by her brother-in-law.
