Box Office Retrospective: Guardians Passes Captain 2 in Domestic

Guardians of the Galaxy

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stood tall for the entire summer as the #1 grossing film domestically…until this weekend. Cinema Blend reports that James Gunn’s Guardians of The Galaxy has passed up Cap 2 with 274 million in domestic grosses (via Box Office Mojo). The film will likely pass 300 million and has tromped previous big 2014 heavyweights like Transformers 4 and Lego Movie before it finally knocked out the mighty Captain this weekend.

Keep in mind that Labor Day will only bump up the grosses even higher and could push GOTG towards that 300 million mark that every summer action movie desires. Guardians was fronted by Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana as well as the likes of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel’s voice work. I considered this the wacky bunch, and the crew with a higher risk than the Avengers due to few knowing who they were. However, the trailer rocked out with classic rock and Gunn’s direction didn’t get in the way of a light cool summer experience.

A sequel is in the works and will do very well. Diesel has benefited from the first return to voice work since the underrated Iron Giant and Pratt gets a good rep as a leading man capable of action, comedy and drama. Fans may remember him in Zero Dark Thirty.

The summer season hasn’t sizzled but that was expected with so few expected to dominate. Guardians took advantage of that.

Confession-This critic has yet to see the film. Running and writing for my website, Film-addict, means you have to dish out certain films to other critics. I have been waiting to see it and shall this week.

Thanks for reading.
