Spoilers for Wolverine and the X-Men #1 –
So the crawl starts with the infamous “no more Phoenix” line of AvX, but also promises the future of Quire as Phoenix, ok…….
As you read this issue of Wolverine and the X-Men, you’ll see everything is every bit as goofy as when we left off. They set the stage for this “new series” which really might as well just be a new arc, as taking place in the summer, where the inmates are running the asylum so to speak. Most of the adult X-Men staff are on summer leave, while the recent graduates have been assigned as proctors. Quire continues to whine about his diploma, but also his supposed “Battle of the Atom” future as a Phoenix, which is briefly gleamed in another flash forward in the beginning, where the “killable” Wolverine is dead, and Kid Apocalypse seems to have gone bad.
The school is generally descending into chaos, and turned more towards Cyclops’s vision of mutant soldiers, meanwhile Wolverine is fighting in a prison for denizens of “The World” under his Patch alias, getting his kill on, and trying to proposition Fantomex to join his staff. Does any of this line up with X-Force? Probably not, but Wolverine is sporting the scar shown in his current ongoing. The issue ends with a Phoenix symbol being mysteriously broadcast worldwide.
My rating: 2.5/5
This is without a doubt the least valid renumbering I’ve seen in Marvel NOW! so far, and Wolverine coming around to Scott’s way of thinking is just one more example of how “Killable” is the worst thing to happen to the character since I came back to reading comics. It’s one step forward/two steps back for Wolverine, meanwhile his team book continues to be good in theory, but atrocious in practice. Instead of any kind of middle ground, we just have two extremes.
