If there’s one thing that I don’t see enough in webcomics, it is crusty old men as protagonists. In a world swarmed with ne’er do well college to young working adult aged  anti heroes with a somewhat alternative outlook on life, it is refreshing to see that Patrick Hoover has opted to go old or go home. And to top it all off, he does it with style in The Outdoorsman.

Let’s get the nitty gritty out of the way first. There’s graphic man-on-monster violence, blood and guts, and a bit of nudity, so this strip isn’t for everyone, but for everyone else, it is definitely worth a look from both the young and the world weary.

So what does The Outdoorsmanhave to offer to readers exactly? A neatly episodic package of strips featuring a unique tale, that of one man named Danny, taking on the world of the supernatural with his trusty guns, anti monster know how, and some good old fashioned grit and moxie.Interesting concept aside, what really shines is the understated way in which Danny takes things in stride as he deals with everything on his hunts, which appear to be both motivated by a desire to do good deeds, but more from the thrill of the hunt, with which he seems to take great pride in his skills and abilities. He has good cause to given the caliber with which he is able to hold himself up to taking on his prey. His prey so far includes the classic, vampire and werewolves, along with some other  interesting regional choices.Coming back from a bit of a hiatus, Patrick has reentered the webcomic game as of March 2012 with a regular publishing every Wednesday since then. Here’s to hoping he keeps it up, because  I’m really curious where this latest tale will lead!
