Wasn’t Danger supposed to be on the Extinction Team? When was the last time you even saw her, I am pretty sure it was in the All-New X-Men covers but I could be wrong. On one side I am absolutely loving All-New X-Men, but on the other I am really struggling with appreciating Uncanny X-Men. It just doesn’t bring the heat like the other X titles do so well. This issue cover displayed Cyclops vs. Magneto! Two guys who have fought, oh I dunno probably 60 to 70 times give or take. The USP (Unique Selling Point for all you non Advertising Majors out there) is Cyclops vs. Magneto, not The X-Men vs. Magneto. Spoiler alert! They never fight. They hardly even raise their voices to one another before they start going all “trust fall” at a girl scout camp fire.
Remember when Emma Frost was a bad ass character? This whole “Oh shit we lost our powers for some reason” is getting really old, really fast. War between Extinction Team and Kitty Pryde’s X-Men should be building, not stalling. Notice how I said building, not fighting every single issue? Nobody wants to see Cyclops vs. Wolverine for the 20th time. A writer nor artist have yet to depict how exactly that fight would actually take place. To say both sides have years of history with one another is an understatement. So why is it that Brian Michael Bendis can’t seem to play this card? Not calling out Bendis for shitting the bed or anything, I am simply pointing out that each writer has such an independent take on the X-Men franchise as a whole, that no one really takes the time to build off anything other than big Marvel events. Yes Jean Grey is dead, I love that she has stayed dead, but they act like she is the only X-Man to ever die. Remember Nightcrawler!? Banshee!? Granted they have really made a good story out of Xavier’s death but Uncanny X-Men should be so much more!
The term defamation of character should be the new term when writers just can’t seem to give character justice. When I say justice I mean give them the character they were given. Brian writes all of his characters in Uncanny X-Men very one dimensional which is crazy because he writes every character on All-New X-Men triumphantly. Maybe I am expecting too much. Searching other websites and twitter for the feedback on Emma Frost I know I am not alone. Emma Frost should command authority and respect. Instead she comes off as a character as lame and insignificant as Jubilee. How about we actually talk about the issue at hand for at least a paragraph? I thought you might appreciate that.
First thing Bachalo is really growing as an artist, more and more I am coming to appreciate his work, and I think it is one of the saving graces of this title. Two parts in this book stick out as worthwhile. The Fabio coming out to his parents about being a mutant, and Angel explaining how trained he really is. I could buy that the original X-Men are in the first year at the school, but three weeks!? What is this the New 52? That is all sorts of stupid. How in the hell is Young Cyclops already such a badass? How have they fought so many bad guys already after only being in the X-Men for three weeks? But the saving grace of this issue was definitely S.H.I.E.L.D honing in on Scott Summers and his Extinction Team. I love Cyclops and I love his heel turn but make him a heel already. They are pushing Scott to the Grey area (not a pun) and I just want to see him kill more people. Xavier is not enough to me. Writers have already butchered Charles Xavier to be a pretty terrible person I feel Scott killing him is slightly justified. Give me a time altering death like Angel or Iceman. The issue isn’t terrible but it isn’t anything special either. At least Bendis actually got a very plot points going, so we may have something to look forward to. Please Bendis follow through with something. Anything.
