Ultimate Fate of the Ultimate Universe

All New Ultimates #1 cover

According to an Associated Press article published on January 10, 2014, there are some big changes coming Marvel Comic’s Ultimate Universe. For me, the biggest disappointment was that the universe was going to continue at all. Why won’t it just die?

The current “Cataclysm” storyline was very exciting to me, because the Ultimate Universe has been around for fourteen years and it just seems like time to pull everything together and have Galactus eat it. After all, Marvel has already pulled the 2099 Universe into the Marvel NOW! Universe with the inclusion of Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man from the year 2099, into the current Superior Spider-Man series. Instead, it looks like this will just be a stepping stone to a relaunch of some titles to hopefully gain some new readership in this alternate universe.

The plan is that, following Galactus’ rampage across New Jersey, the Ultimate world will be  a different place. Spider-Man, youngster Miles Morales, along with other Ultimate versions of Cloak, Dagger, Black Widow, Kitty Pryde, Bombshell, and the remnants of two super-teams, The All New Ultimates and Future Foundation, will all be changed and life will be rearranged. The covers that have been revealed for the relaunch titles all bear the All New Marvel NOW! logo which is interesting, because Marvel has always kept the line between the two universes pretty clearly defined. This overlap is an interesting development.

Look forward to continued changes in the coming year. One statement from Joshua Hale Fialkov, writer of Ultimate FF stated, “”We look at the opportunity ‘Cataclysm’ gave us to reset the board and do some really cool stuff with the characters.” All I can say is, I hope so. I loved the Ultimate Universe when it first started, the old characters reimagined and modernized. These comics have given us the basic idea of the Avengers that we have in the Marvel cinematic universe as well as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Let’s keep our eyes open as we go through this year for what Marvel has in store for us.
