Things To Come – Uncanny X-Men

Michael Wirth 11/02/2011 Reviews

Last week, Marvel gave readers a sneak peek into the future of the new smash title, Wolverine & The X-Men. Today, fans were treated to a similar peek at the other side, the X-Men under Cyclops’ watch, Uncanny X-Men. Just like Wolvie and his team, the West Coast X-Men are in for quite a pounding from all sides, from both enemies and allies alike.

Excited for Uncanny X-Men #1 from Kieron Gillen and Carlos Pacheco, on sale today?

Kieron Gillen is apparently not giving Cyclops and the X-Men any time to breathe after the events of Schism and Regenesis. Most of what’s happening in that image is a giant question mark. We see that new Colossus/Juggernaut (Colosso-naut?) will play a role in a future story, as will Hope. And it looks like Emma Frost will be stepping out on Cyclops with the King of Atlantis, which really doesn’t surprise me at all.

However, given all of that, there are two things that I’m really interested in, the first being that big, white figure with the large guns in the center. Who, or what, is that? Is it a new model of Sentinel sent after Utopia? Or perhaps an old villain bent on settling the score. It’s been a while since readers have seen Ahab, who has had a serious hatred for mutants. Could he have upped his armor and looking to make his final stand against the X-Men?

But what I’m most interested in is that dark figure near the bottom, who looks an awful lot like the Phalanx to me. I’ve been a huge fan of the Phalanx villain ever since the historical storyline Phalanx Covenant back in the 90s. And since we have seen Cameron Hodge and Stephen Lang, both of whom were humanoid manifestations of the Phalanx, in the recent Second Coming storyline, it’s plausible that they would be biding their time to make a grand appearance. Will the Phalanx be returning to haunt Cyclops and the X-Men?

Now that we’ve gotten a glimpse at the future of Utopia’s mutants, I’m really torn over which title I’m looking forward to most. While there are a lot of good things set to happen in Wolverine & The X-Men, it looks like Uncanny X-Men has just as much of an exciting future. Looks like I’ll just have to add both titles to my pull list.
