The ThunderCats New Look

The ThunderCats New Look

The ThunderCats return to television this year with a new anime look and and a promise to remain true to the classic cartoon series from the 80s. After a 21 year absence Cartoon Network will take us back to Third Earth. Producer Michael Jelenic Promises “we will see all the characters we love.”

In the new look department an official picture showing Lion-O, Panthro, Cheetara, and Tygra was posted on twitpic by @wordwarthree. That twitter account belongs to writer Todd Casey, writer for Batman the Brave and the Bold and the Transformers animated series. Mr.Casey is “Putting the Ho! in Thundercats.” according to his page.  Studio4C will be bringing their style to the series. You may have seen their work in Batman: Gotham Knight and the Animatrix.

Michael Jelenic also of (Batman Brave and the Bold) has been vocal about the storyline and some of the changes. Telling MTV Slash Page: “One thing is that I tried to simplify the mythology a little bit,” he said. “It’s a pretty complicated backstory that borrows from a lot of other sci-fi stuff, like Superman and Star Wars. In developing this, I wanted it to be a little more simple. In the other version, there’s something like three different planets involved, and they all converge onto one planet, and nobody’s really connected. I just wanted to bring that all together.”

Some may have concerns these new “reimagined’ ThunderCats will not live up to the fond memories of the 80s. This “new” anime style and having people from Batman the Brave and the Bold working on the project could take the Cats in a direction not befitting the ThunderCats legacy. To give some hope to those protective of the original series, voice actor Larry Kenney who played Lion-O in the 80s will be among the cast as Lion-O’s father, Claudius. With Mr. Kenny involved some of that great legacy is sure to be present.

The ThunderCats are scheduled to be shown on Cartoon Network this year with no official date as of yet but Yes, Snarf is in it, and Jelenic has said Snarf will not be speaking.

The new Thundercats pic reminds of Zelda…Hope they bring Ben-Gali back haha…Think Mumm-Ra wins this time? I hope so, poor guy.

  2. I actually think this looks pretty awesome! The old look wouldnt hold up as well in a modern world, the new look works really well!

  3. WAY to anime. Gotta admit it’s made me lose some interest. Maybe when more is announced and released I’ll change my views.

Thunder, thunder, thunder, THUND-ER CATS! Now a new generation can get hooked on the catnip that is Thunder Cats!

  5. Couldn’t help noticing no Snarf…

  6. Snarf seems to be the make or break point for everyone. Even more so than the this anime style. He will be there somewhere, just not speaking.

    • Wait… he won’t be speaking? AT ALL? Thats just as bad as taking away Deadpools mouth in ‘Wolverine: Origins’. A non-talking Snarf is worse than no Snarf at all.

thanks for the preview, i think this is just gonna inspire me to re-watch the old one tho!

  8. I still watch the old ones! Even if this is good I am pretty sure I will always watch the old ones.

  9. I’m just glad that the hand drawn animation style isn’t totally dead, seeing how computer animation is quickly becoming the norm.
