Well, the wait is over. For those of us that have had a Middle-Earth sized hole in our lives, Peter Jackson has given us something with which to fill it: the first official trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. There has been a lot of speculation over the last few years about whether the film would even get made. Well, here it is!
The film was originally set to be directed by Guillermo del Toro, though he dropped out in the face of a plethora of pre-production problems, including battles over the movie’s budget. Since it was his baby anyway, Peter Jackson stepped in to direct not only this movie but also the sequel, The Hobbit: There and
Back Again, which is set for release at the end of 2013. These films are set before the award-winning Lord of the Rings movies, and Bilbo Baggins is now the center of attention, with Martin Freeman assuming the title role. But let’s not forget the rest of his cohorts! The cast features James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Graham McTavish, William Kircher and Jed Brophy as Bofur, Bombur, Dwalin, Bifur and Nori respectively. And last but certainly not least, there’s everyones favorite wizard: a much younger Gandalf the Grey, once again brought to life by Sir Ian Mckellen. We can also expect to see Andy Serkis return to the role of Gollum.
The trailer itself is fantastic. It has all the elements that make it instantly recognizable to fans everywhere. The background music is provided by the hobbits themselves and the cinematography is nothing short of drop dead gorgeous. As excited as I was about the film before, I now find it even harder to wait another year to see the finished product. That’s right, the movie doesn’t come out until December 14, 2012. Furthermore, I couldn’t be happier to have Peter Jackson back at the helm. His masterful direction of the previous trilogy aside, the man knows almost as much about middle earth as Tolkien himself.
The synopsis for the film is this: “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
The trailer (which you can check out below) looks nothing short of incredible. Enjoy it; I know I did. Feel free to join the discussion over on the forums. And be sure to keep an eye on Comic Booked for all your Hobbit updates!

Good work Jeremy. I couldn’t help myself, had to throw my two cents in once I could breathe again – http://podcasts.comicbooked.com/blue-jumper-12-there-and-back-again-a-hobbits-trailer/
