Today, acclaimed comic book artist Eduardo Barreto passed away at the age of 57, young by today’s standards. I have to admit that I am a Marvel fan and have been so throughout my youth. To my admittance I have never really recognized the man’s name until now. He had a long run at DC comics, a company I did not regularly collect from. I remember seeing his covers on shelves, most notably on “The New Teen Titans”, but never actually picked them up. In fact through his list of credits, even of the titles he worked on at Marvel, the only books I ever picked up of his were DC Elseworld’s Line Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which has Barreto listed as an Inker, and V, on which he is credited as a cover Artist.

He also worked on the one shot Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography, which could be argued as his best work. Originally born in Uruguay he transitioned to American comic books in the early 80’s.  His prominent list is majorly through DC but has worked elsewhere, most recently a Captain Action Special with Beau Smith.

In 2010 Eduardo Barreto was diagnosed with Meningitis, sometimes referred to as Spinal Meningitis, which is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord. It is believed that this disease is what caused his eventual death.

I might not know much about who he was, but looking at his credits has piqued my interest. I fear that when I am done seeing all that he has accomplished, I am going to be filled with slight regret and sorrow that I didn’t fully appreciate him sooner.

 RIP Eduardo Barreto 1954-2011
