Yesterday, comic artist Oliver Nome posted the following on his DeviantArt journal:
Hello friends, this isn’t easy for me to say so I’m just gonna get it out… I found out last week that I have a brain tumor and it has to come out in the next week or so. Being a freelance artist I unfortunately have no health insurance. My art dealer Mike Alexander will be selling all of my art at discounted rates and he along with my good friend Ale Garza will be excepting donations… you can also find them both on my facebook page. I’m scared but I will get through this but will be out of work for awhile. I hate to ask but anything helps… I’ve got tons of art and prints for sale!
For those who may not be as familiar with Oliver, he has been working professionally since 2006 working primarily for WildStorm and DC. For those who followed the Flashpoint story arc from DC (just before the new 52 launch) you may know his work from the pages of Kid Flash: Lost. Since the New 52, he has also been involved with the Mister Terrific title, and as a freelance artist has also been working on the Fathom: Kiani series.
In order to help cover his medical costs during this time, Oliver is selling off much of his collection through his art dealer. You can see many of his items that are up for sale on his Comic Art Fans gallery page as well as directly through Mike Alexander’s site.
We’ve all heard stories recently about many comic creators running into medical- and health-related issues of late and not being able to do much, especially with the cost of health care these days. When an individual is freelance and does not have a fixed and steady income, sometimes they need to reach out to those around them to make their ends meet. Let’s all see what we can do to help out one of these creative individuals in his time of need and give him one less thing for him and his family to worry about.
