Make this another issue of Uncanny X-Men where the story actually moves forward! Cyclops and his Extinction Team of X-Men decide to go back and save the guy who can produce Gold Balls that go, PLOINK from S.H.I.E.L.D. This guy is actually halfway likable unlike the rest of the team. Magneto, Cyclops, Magik, Emma Frost round out the main members and it just gets even more unlikable from there. Even though Cyclops is more captivating than ever before (except maybe when he was merged with Apocalypse) and he still comes off as “Lame”. The guy killed Xavier, he is leading a mutant revolution, he is the face of change in the mutant community yet he is being written off as just another guy. Bendis you are writing a book about a man who has lost his way, formed a bullshit team of X-Men and has the gonads to call them X-Men! This guy named his “school” after Charles Xavier! Scott Summers has lost his mind! Run with it! This is the kind of material that gets you nominated for awards. This is what makes you the number one book in Marvel. If you have the audacity to change the X-Men don’t tread lightly. The time for change is now! Go forth and wreak havoc! Only the Thunderbolts are composed of people more deranged than this X-Men team. Instead you are having them quarrel over having trouble with their mutant powers? You have characters so complex the story can write itself. But even though I think you are capable of so much more, Brian, I really liked this issue.
Dazzler being added to the story is frustrating and fantastic all at once. Frustrating due to how many characters are already having to share story time, and then we add Alison Blair, Angel, and the Stepford Cuckoos!? This book should be Cyclops book from start to finish. He is the most captivating character in the entire X universe right now. You may be sitting there thinking I have lost my mind if I think Cyclops is the most captivating character in the X universe when you have the original X-Men who have returned, Alison Blair as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, etc. But when push comes to shove Cyclops is dealing with killing a man he considered a father figure. A man he utterly respected and loved dearly. He killed this man because he couldn’t control the urges of The Phoenix. That is eating him alive and we see none of that! We saw glimpses when the series first started but then we just moved past it. We don’t move past that Brian. We use that to mold Scott into a man who has hit rock bottom and needs a serious comeback. Maybe that is what we have in the works already? Back to Alison Blair who is the newest agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Why is her addition to the book a good thing? Dazzler may not be an original X-Man but she was one of the earlier X-Men and she definitely has history with Magneto, Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Magik. However the number one reason why Dazzler being added as a S.H.I.E.L.D liaison is because she is on ANOTHER side of the spectrum. We have Wolverine, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Beast and the (real?) X-Men in one corner. Cyclops and his “X-Men” in the other corner. Mystique, Sabretooth, and Lady Mastermind planning something BIG in another corner. NOW we have Dazzler teaming with the super secret government branch who has never once stepped up to help mutants. She could be considered as much a traitor as Cyclops. This is good for comics. Comics need this to make them have the tension and drama people have come to expect from any X title.
I keep giving Chris Bachalo props as his artwork continues to improve but this issue just didn’t impress me as much. Not saying it was bad, just not nearly the quality he has been putting out. Love the cover but it bugs me simply because Dazzler DOES NOT need a gun. Maybe it is supposed to represent how Alison Blair is now an Agent, but it just rubs me the wrong way. Agent Coulson still does’t feel like a person in the Marvel Universe. I have no problem with Coulson being added into the Marvel Universe, but he just doesn’t feel as important as Maria Hill by any means. But to be fair when Maria Hill was added she didn’t feel nearly as important as Fury. Is Dazzler going to become another top agent like those previously mentioned or is this “Agent” stint simply that: A stint to make Dazzler a more appealing character. Even with all the things that bother me about this series this issue was great. The dialog between Dazzler and Cyclops some of the best dialog in this series so far. And it really opened doors. Keep them open Bendis.
