At the video game panel for Dark Horse Comics during Emerald City Comic Con this past weekend, the comics giant announced a new book that will have nerds across the globe, myself definitely included, frothing at the mouth in anticipation: The Art of Portal 2!
We’re talking about a book full of art for the the wonderfully told, and beautifully made, sequel to the 2007 Game of the Year, people. The continued story of Chell, GLaDOS and Aperture Science Labs… and a lot of history for the company and the characters, as well.
According to Dark Horse:
The Art of Portal 2 offers incredible visuals of the Aperture Science facility and the creation of Chell and the rest of the cast, and features 184 pages of mostly never-before-seen art and a look into the design process of the legendary game studio.
I don’t know about you, but all of that sounds ridiculously delicious to me, and that may just be my degree in art talking…. nah, this art book is going to be enjoyed by plenty of people. Dare I say, anyone who played the games? We’ll certainly find out…. But not until October 31, which is when the book comes out.
By the way, if you need something to tide you over between now and then… You should definitely play through the games again! But after finishing the first, follow this link and read the comic Lab Rat, before heading to fire up the portal gun for the second game. Lab Rat is an evocative look into the schizophrenic mind and past of The Rat Man, and ties together the events that transpire between the first and second games.
And after you read that, and play through Portal 2, even do the co-op mode, and still have time before The Art of Portal 2 comes out? Then it’s time for Turret Lullaby. Keep on the lookout in both of these free online comics for the trademark dark humor we’ve come to know and love about the Portal franchise.
Who else can’t wait to get their hands on some of the concept art for GLaDOS, the turrets, and the broken-down testing rooms from Portal 2? I hope they include sketches of Rat Man’s murals! And as seen from the top picture, they’ll feature some art from space… space… space space space *grk* ahem, sorry, too. Some space art will be included. What do you think?
