SUPERNATURAL – A Retrospective of the Last Decade – SEASON ONE

Supernatural

Supernatural has signed on for an 11th season!!! I can’t even describe how excited this makes me! I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I thought season 10 would be the final season for Supernatural, but I am happy to say I was so wrong thinking that!! So, the question on everyone’s mind is: What will happen to the Winchesters next? The writers have this keen ability to come up with the most ass-kicking story lines for the brothers, that anything is possible! Sam and Dean have been through so much! Literally they have been to Hell and back! Let’s go back and revisit just HOW MUCH these guys have been through over the past 10 years…

Season One

From the beginning, we get a glimpse into the brothers’ past…their mother dies a horrible fiery death in Sam’s nursery, at the hands of some unknown demon. This begins a new life for the Winchesters, as their father becomes obsessed with trying to find the demon responsible for Mary Winchester’s death. John decides to raise his sons to be Hunters. It’s a life that Dean has embraced, but Sam has pulled away from…

Supernatural

The season began with Sam in college, trying to live a “normal life”, until his older brother, Dean shows up telling him their father has disappeared. Rather reluctantly, Sam agrees to go with Dean to try and track him down, as long as Dean understands that this is a one-time-only deal for Sam. He clearly has zero interest in the “family business”. The brothers don’t end up find their father and Sam returns to Stanford, only to witness his girlfriend, Jess, ignited into flames on the ceiling of their apartment, the very same way their mother died years before. The death of Jess drives Sam to join Dean hunting, until he can find the demon responsible for Jess’s and his mother’s deaths.

Supernatural

The brothers are in possession of John Winchester’s journal, which is literally filled with hundreds of hunting entries. There are clues and pictures and cryptic messages galore in the journal. Most of which are extremely helpful to the brothers, and others seem to be clues as to the possible whereabouts of their father. About halfway through the season, John Winchester contacts Dean, informing him that he is hunting the demon that killed their mother and Jess. John doesn’t want the boys to help, as he instructs them to take on a case he wants them to solve. This angers Sam, as he thinks they should go find and help their father, and Sam argues with Dean, and then leaves him to go find his father. On his travels, Sam meets Meg, a seemingly innocent young girl also traveling. Sam eventually returns to help Dean, and we see Meg slit the throat of a truck driver, then use his blood in a goblet to contact some unknown being referred to as “father”.

Supernatural

Shortly after, Sam begins to have nightmares of people’s deaths. These nightmares prove to be prophetic and the brothers are able to save various people that Sam has dreamed will die. We meet a dorky couple of guys, Ed and Harry, the “Ghostfacers”…two guys trying to get famous investigating hauntings live. Soon enough, Sam’s nightmares have become premonitions. Mid-season Sam meets Max, a young guy with telekinetic abilities. Sam learns that Max’s mother dies the exact same way his own mother did. John Winchester shows up and retrieves the infamous Colt pistol, which is rumored to have the ability to kill anything with one shot. Meg also returns, demanding the Colt in exchange for sparing the lives of their friends. John tries to trick Meg with a lookalike Colt, which ends up getting him captured. The brothers then turn to Bobby Singer (a favorite of mine!) for help in rescuing their father. Bobby is a fellow Hunter and a second father to the brothers. They manage to trap Meg and exorcise her, thus killing her, not before she gives them a clue to their father’s location. Azazel, the demon responsible for Mary Winchester and Jess’s death has possessed John, who momentarily gains control of his body and instructs Sam to use the Colt to kill him, which would also kill Azazel. Sam can’t bring himself to do it and shoots his father in the leg, which expels Azazel, and as the three are on their way to a hospital, they are in a horrible car wreck when a possessed truck driver rams into their Impala. What an unexpected, yet AWESOME ending to the first season!
