It look’s like Superman is making a trip into the furthest reaches of outer space within the pages of his first special annual issue. Apparently this is going to be an attempt by DC to expand its cosmic universe, which is a surprising announcement considering the Green Lantern line does this on a monthly basis. So what can we expect to find? Writer Keith Giffen and Editor Pat McCallum drop some hints to The Source:
“Ever wonder what’s out there beyond the farthest known reaches of the DC Universe?” writer Keith Giffen teased to THE SOURCE. “Superman’s about to get the answer to that – in spades – as we introduce an entirely new cosmic realm and drop him into the middle of it. The DC Universe’s cosmic presence is about to be dramatically expanded and it all starts with … a game show?”
“Captured and transported to an alien world, Superman will fight for his life against the galaxy’s best equipped bounty hunters,” editor Pat McCallum told THE SOURCE about the 48-page issue. “It’s all part of a planet-wide reality game, televised live and used to raise money for…something. BONUS: Some unexpected help in the form of a deep-cover agent of the Green Lantern Corps!”
With Superman being removed from Earth’s yellow sun, this brings up the obvious question of, “what power level Superman will we be seeing in this issue?” We’ve seen that he can perform at full strength on other planets, but those adventures were very short visitations. Personally I’d like to see how the New 52 Superman performs with diminished powers.
Also with the mention of the Bounty Hunters, did anyone else wonder if maybe Lobo might make an appearance? It’ll be interesting to see if this issue really does have any long lasting impact on Superman or the DC Universe.
SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 will fly into stores on August 29th.
