Stir the Pot Saturday: Week 28

Week 28 Picture 1

Welcome back, everyone!  Just a quick reminder of what our goal for each and every Saturday is:  Stirring the pot is the act of causing trouble for the sake of your own amusement.  So we here at Comic Booked would like to formally invite you to discuss, debate, and start some shit talkin’ about the characters, the creators, and the storylines given to us from the industry we all know and love, hate, and love to hate.  So let’s quit wasting time and start the mud (or web) slinging!

This Saturday’s question: What is your favorite non-superhero title?

 Week 28 Picture 2

Do you like a specific web comic?  Do you like a little romance in your pull and hold list?  Are you a humor enthusiast?  Do you only read horror tales?  Do you avoid “The Big Two” and stick solely with independent books?  Is slice of life your favorite genre to read on a regular basis?  Is social commentary your thing?  Do you only read graphic novels?  Or is your favorite non-superhero series, miniseries, or one-shot something that doesn’t fit any of these categories?

Week 28 Picture 3

So go forth and debate!  But be sure to back up your responses.  Don’t be scared.  And don’t give up.  After all, no one likes a quitter.  And you’re not a quitter, are you?

Easy: FABLES! I've been reading it since it started in 2002 and have enjoyed it completely, including all the spin-offs.
A close second is a more recent series for me: Dark Shadows from Dynamite Entertainment. It's the continuation of the classic TV series and totally ignores that disgustingly bad Tim Burton movie.

I've actually never read either of those titles. I've always been curious about Fables. Looks good. Probably pass on the Dark Shadows comic, though. I know nothing about the characters and actually enjoyed the Tim Burton movie, so it's probably not the comic for me. Thanks for the suggestions!

Fables has been great since it started. Granted there are a few issues that aren't as good as most but even the less than good issues of Fables are still better than most of what's coming out today. And to think, I only picked up the first issue because I liked the cover.

As for Dark Shadows, the source material was far better than the movie. I honestly don't think anyone involved in making that movie was at all familiar with the series. They even got some of the names wrong! Dark Shadows isn't a goofy, 70's-era, day-glo, comedy with sexual humor. It's far better than that.

But at least check out the first volume of Fables, it's worth it!

I'll definitely check out Fables. I really liked Bill Willingham's short run on superhero books for DC (what with the Countdown to Infinite Crisis miniseries, Shadowpact, and his tenure as head Batman writer) so I'm sure I'll love it. As for Dark Shadows, I think I might actually be the only person on the planet who enjoyed that movies, so I should probably check out the old show and new comic. I'm sure I'd enjoy both for different reasons. Or maybe come to hate the movie. Haha.

I very rarely branch out from the Big Two or superhero books, but when I do, I usually either go for a horror comic that looks unique or follow a favorite writer to their own creator-owned book. Honestly, this isn't really a stir the pot so much as a Jeff needs a recommendation list.
