SPOILERS: The New Star Of Green Lantern Is…

Jordamus Prime 07/14/2011 Reviews

It would appear that not all is as it seems with the upcoming DC Comics ‘reboot’ this September! DC has been telling fans that some of the bigger books wouldn’t be changing too drastically, but then earlier today they dropped a bit of a doozy on Green Lantern fans when they revealed the official cover art for the brand new Green Lantern #1 on the DC Source Blog!

The cover is featuring the person that has been dubbed the ‘new Green Lantern of Sector 2814′, a position that was thought to still belong to Green Lantern Hal Jordan. The actual cover itself features cover art from Ivan Reis & Joe Prado and is featured below.

So what do you think about Sinestro, one of the Green Lantern Corp’s worst enemies, rejoining their ranks this fall? What about his taking over Sector 2814 from Hal Jordan? And what will Hal Jordan be up to is Sinestro is starring in the main Green Lantern title? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

I'm pretty psyched for this, actually. I've been loving Johns' work so far, and if anyone can make this pay off, it's him.

Eh, I don't know how I feel about it. It's like… I finally get used to Hal taking the job from Kyle again, and now this? Meh. Not to mention that this leaves the Sinestro Corps without a leader (or at least a proper one). I'm waiting to read before I give any real judgement, but I'm not nearly as excited for the new GL #1 as I was a week ago.

See, that's part of the reason this interests me! What does this mean for the Sinestro Corps? Though somehow I doubt they'll be calling themselves that, haha.

Besides, Kyle's still around. As long as I have a Kyle Rayner book to read, I don't really care who's Green Lanterning for Sector 2814, providing the stories are good.

No, they're still calling it that. They solicited issue #2 already and it has Sinestro going up against the Sinestro Corps. Haha what an ass, I bet he planned this whole thing "First! I'll hire a bunch of badasses to work for me and be evil, THEN I will become a Green Lantern again and pummel the crap out of them to regain my honor" haha

          • Nick C 07/14/2011 at 5:59 pm

But will they continue using the name in the story, or is that just so we know what the hell they're talking about in the solit? We'll see, I suppose.

Not entirely happy with this, really. When Hal went bonkers and killed a bunch of GLs, he had the excuse of having a totally evil entity of fear possessing him at the time. What's Sinestro's excuse for running a Corps of sadistic madmen, criminals, and lunatics that sought out and killed as many or MORE Green Lanterns than Hal did? Not to mention freeing Superboy Prime and unleashing him on Earth? And let's not forget the little bit about tricking the Guardians into adding "allowed to kill" to the Book of Oa. That was naughty.

Or is this a case of get a white entity for a while, do a good deed, get a uniform with a spiffy collar, and all is forgiven?

    • Nick C 07/14/2011 at 4:18 pm

Well, it was the spiffy collar, obviously.

Isn't Sinestro from Korugar, which is not in Sector 2814? Why would he be chosen to replace Hal..?

    • Jordamus Prime 07/14/2011 at 5:35 pm

Not all Green Lantern's hail from the sector they protect, prior to Hal Jordan, Abin Sur was the GL of 2814, but he clearly wasn't from these parts…

      • Seth Jacob 07/14/2011 at 5:46 pm

Abin Sur's home planet is Ungara, which is in Sector 2814. Sinestro's home planet is Korugar, which is in Sector 1417.

    Wow, heavy green lantern discussion!

I'm going to quote my mate Patrick, who coincidentally happened to mention a similar idea for the franchise to me just a few days ago –

"Courage and will aren't the same thing. Will is desire, the spark behind ac…tion. Sure, it's diluted by knowing fear. Somehow, if I wrote Green Lantern, I think I might convey that Sinestro really is the greatest Green Lantern. If being a Green Lantern is all about Will, then a tyrant who can't stand dissent is the greatest Green Lantern."

Fellow's got a point. Johns has introduced this whole idea of an emotional sprectrum of Lanterns. If each corps is supposed to be such a literal personification of different emotions, Sinestro really does make much more sense as a Green Lantern.

(…..and Blackest Night missed a trick in not making Batman the Fear Lantern instead of Scarecrow. Just sayin')

"Blackest Night missed a trick in not making Batman the Fear Lantern instead of Scarecrow."

The problem with that idea, is that Bruce Wayne was 'dead' during Blackest Night, and Dick Grayson was Batman at the time. Grayson took Batman in a very different direction and wasn't nearly as immersed int he whole "fear' aspect of the hero.

Even so, Scarecrow with a yellow ring? Gold.

I read somewhere (this was a while ago, so I don't remember what it was recapping or if it was even in continuity)that Bruce was at one point "approached" by a yellow ring and he rejected the thing. I wish I could be more specific, but I'm drawing a blank.

Yes, he was and he did deny it. It was during the prelude to the Sinestro Corps War.
