Yep, that’s right, the man that has been fighting crime solo for the majority of his career (with the exception of several team-ups, of course) is finally getting a sidekick! Earlier this month, Marvel teased us with a new mystery character called Alpha, who is due to make his first appearance in the August’s fiftieth anniversary issue of Amazing Spider-Man. We now know that Alpha is going to be the wall-crawlers first ever sidekick.
Andy Macguire (Alpha) is a 15-year-old who becomes a superhero in a manner similar to Peter Parker. On a school field trip to Peter’s laboratory, Andy gets zapped by an invention which subsequently leaves him with superpowers. Peter, being there to witness it (and at least partially responsible for this accident) now feels responsible for Andy’s predicament and takes it upon himself to take him under his wing and teach him how to use his powers.
Despite similar origins, Alpha’s path will be different from Peter’s. Personality wise, Andy has confidence and is considerably less predictable. That’s the polar opposite of Peter, who – especially early on – was always known for lacking confidence and being more or less insecure about his abilities.
Look for Alpha to make his debut in Amazing Spider-Man #692 this August.
