So unless you’ve been living under a rock in a cave on the moon of late, you may have heard that the Ultimate Universe’s Peter Parker died in Ultimate Spider-Man #160. Furthermore, a new Spider-Man will be making his debut in Ultimate Fallout #4 next week and taking Parker’s place in the all new ongoing Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #1 this September. Whenever speculation abounds, Comic Booked is never far behind – so it’s time for us to open our books and give you our take on the odds on who will be donning the webbed spandex. Place your bets! (For legal reasons it should be made clear that we’re not actually taking bets. Not after we got cleaned out last time*)
One of our favourite additions to the Ultimate Spider-Man mythos, once-bully Kenny McFarlane (or Clifford Harlan depending what Ultimate books you’ve actually read) pieced together Peter Parker’s secret identity over the course of the title’s first volume. Given that he was known for idolizing Spider-Man, even going so far as to snag a role in the in-universe Spider-Man movie, would he be inspired enough to pull on the webs and take up the mantle? No. Look at the size of him compared to the new Ultimate Spider-Man. Just no. Odds: 50/1
2. Ultimate Miguel O’Hara
The Spider-Man of the future! Here’s a character begging to be ultimized! Marvel Universe of 2099 represent, amirite? No? Okay. Odds: 100/1
The first original villain of the Ultimate universe was created by Bendis and Bagley back in Ultimate Spider-Man #40, and swiftly failed to set the world alight, despite his amazing vaguely-defined pyro-kinetic-explodo powers. Could the fall of Spidey be the chance for Geldoff to rise, and redeem himself? Let’s hope not. Geldoff was last seen being taken in by the X-Men, and is probably the one Ultimate Marvel Universe character we wouldn’t have minded getting washed away in Ultimatum. If that didn’t happen, fingers crossed he got hunted down when the anti-mutant laws came to force. Odds: we don’t even want to think about it.
4. Ben Reilly
Curt Connors’ lab assistant played a part in the creation of Ultimate Carnage, so he’s certainly got something to atone for. Writer Brian Michael Bendis has said that the new Ultimate Spidey is inspired by Peter Parker’s death – will Ben Reilly be compelled to become a hero to make up for the monster he helped create? And more importantly, will the replacement for Peter Parker in the all-new, all-different, original-idea packed Ultimate Marvel universe really just be a character called Ben Reilly? It’s kind of been done before. Odds: 5/1
5. Some character that’s never appeared in the book before and just shows up and we’re supposed to accept that they’re Spider-Man now like nothing ever happened why, Bendis, why?!?
Who knows for sure? I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out through USA Today the day before the book comes out like everyone else. Who do you think will be swinging come next week? Sound off in the comments below!
Ultimate Fallout #4 hits stands Wednesday comic, August 3rd.
