Back in June, Marvel announced a new on-going series for Spider-Man. The new series, Avenging Spider-Man, is based on his tenure with the Avengers and likely to have a multitude of guest stars. Marvel recently showcased two variant covers for the first issue of the series, each drawn by two powerhouses in the comic book industry; Humberto Ramos and J. Scott Campbell.
Ramos and Campbell join a third amazing artist, that of Joe Madureira. Madureira, who has been out of the comic book business since 2008, when he finished pencils for Marvel’s Ultimates 3, returns to Marvel as the regular penciller for the title, Madureira has done work for the video game industry, notably as a creative director for Darksiders from Vigil Games.
Madureira pairs with past Spider-Man scribe and Robot Chicken writer Zeb Wells for the series. Wells has written a number of issues starring the wall-crawler, notably during the period of thrice-monthly release. He has also worked on other Marvel titles including New Mutants and Heroes For Hire.
Marvel writes in their press release concerning the variant covers:
The blockbuster creative team of Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira bring fans one of the biggest launches of 2011! Not only does this new ongoing series (Avenging Spider-Man) mark the return of Joe Maduriera to comics, but also an entirely new chapter for the wall-crawler as he teams up with the biggest names of the Marvel Universe. This November, no fan can miss the Avenging Spider-Man #1 Ramos/Campbell Variants!
It’s probably not farfetched to say that Avenging Spider-Man is going to be big. For years, fans have had only one Spider-title, Amazing Spider-Man, after being inundated with three, four, even five monthly titles starring the wall-crawler. While Amazing has been running bi-monthly since November of 2010 (a title which Dan Slott has been writing superbly), and thrice-monthly since Brand New Day in January 2008, fans had always had multiple Spider-issues every month, just all under one title. However, with the addition of Avenging, readers will get a more robust story of Spider-Man’s adventures with the Avengers, and hopeful the series will delve into his relationships with his teammates.
Avenging Spider-Man begins November 9.
