The original film, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie hit theaters back in 1995 with another film in 1997. Since then, the Power Rangers franchise has been fixed to the small screen.

Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level,” said Saban.  “They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re con!dent that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.

From the press release, it looks like the new film, which doesn’t have a date announced yet, will look more like a reboot of the classic Power Rangers rather than a continuation of the current series on TV. Additionally, the release notes that this will be a “film franchise”, which certainly sounds like sequels are part of the conversation from the get-go.

The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.

Personally, I loved the original series of Power Rangers until the White Ranger was introduced. Before that, it was one of my favorite childhood series. In fact, I think the original film was really a great tribute to the series and showed what they could do with a decent budget. Which incarnation was your favorite? Do you think the world is ready for a reboot of Power Rangers?
