I adore Phoenix Wright. I bought my original, continental size DS because of that game and the series has never let me down. So it was very nice to stumble across Siliconera’s article about Capcom’s announcement that Phoenix Wright 5 in development. Unfortunately they didn’t specify any platform specifics or storyline information, but I’d be hard pressed to believe that Nintendo wouldn’t want it to be a 3DS title, given how rabid it’s fanbase is. Aside from announcing PW5, Capcom also announced that they are working on HD remakes of the first three Phoenix Wright titles for iOS and Android. Each title will have newly remastered graphics and will cost 600 yen ($7.80) or you can get the trilogy for 1,200 yen ($15.60).
Now, as if this wasn’t enough good news for all of you fans of finger pointing justice, Takashi Miike’s film adaptation of the popular game was screened at The International Film Festival Rotterdam, and at their time of the review it was in the top ten for audience favorites at 4.3 out of 5. Positive reviews aside, it would seem that Miike has taken on the herculean challenge presented to him by Capcom and the producers of interweaving all five trials into one single film with great success.
Those first small cases open a can of worms which doesn’t get closed until the end of the fifth trial, and therefore the producers (and Capcom) decided that the film should cover all five trials. Whoops… that is a whole lot of story, and a pretty convoluted one as well.
So “Ace Attorney” lasts a whopping 135 minutes and needs them all. That the film never falters under its own narrative weight is a marvel, and probably its biggest success.
And as if that wasn’t news enough for everyone, Miike was questioned as to why the film used the names from the Western version of the game and his response simply eluded to his lofty goals of a global release of the film with localized dubbing. Frankly if he can manage to pull something like that then more power to you Mr Miike. You’ll have a worldwide fanbase thanking you.
