For the past nine years, each summer the Wizard World Tour has taken the city of Philadelphia, PA by storm! Though the convention itself has seen it’s ups and downs over the last few years, Wizard World Philadelphia has always been a pretty solid experience for con-goers. So far we’re one day into the event and it’s already proving to be one of the best conventions that Philadelphia has seen in years! So what’s Wizard World Philly all about, and what makes this convention worth going to?
For starters, Wizard has really taken the time and effort to revitalize the con both last year and this year and it shows! From the impressive guest roster of A-list talent to the huge number of dealers on the sales floor this year, Wizard World Philadelphia 2011 is truly a convention not to miss. While the convention has generally been a pleasant experience since it first started hitting Philadelphia way back in 2002, it had shown signs of decline over the past few years, but between last year and this current rendition, it seems that Wizard World Philadelphia is back in the game! Even if you aren’t super big on comic books, there truly is something for everyone at this con!
While some of the major draws of large conventions are missing (most notably the presence of any major publishers aside from Zenescope, who has a great booth set up!), there is still plenty going on throughout this three day convention to keep busy with. There are all kinds of cool panels happening over the course of the weekend including Q&A sessions with great Hollywood talents like Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead Series, Burn Notice) or Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars, Batman), as well as other panels talking about things in the comic industry like the massive Green Lantern panel (which was so big it had to be spread out across two panels on separate days)! Another cool theme that Wizard has going this year is ‘famous vehicles’, with various cars from movies and television series live on the floor for you to see. Cars on hand include the original Batmobile, The Mystery Machine, and the Delorean from Back to the Future to name a few! Not to mention the various comics and collectibles available on the sales floor for you to pick up!
Besides the actual convention events, there are all the great cosplayers to look forward to (expect a full gallery later this weekend!) and tons of other great fans on hand to chat with! Don’t forget if you yourself are a cosplayer that Wizard Hosts a huge Costume Contest every year with tons of great prizes to be had! Comic Conventions are generally great for social networking with like-minded people with similar interests, and Wizard World Philly is no exception. I myself first met our own CGC Lee for the first time at Wizard World Philadelphia back in 2008!
So the question you have to ask yourself now is, what are you waiting for? While the scale of the con itself may be slightly smaller this year, the fun factor of a Wizard con feels about the same as it always has, making this convention a must for comic book fans and geeks in general in the tri-state area!
