PAX Prime is in full swing here in Seattle, Washington. This year I am trying a new strategy to cover PAX. I have accepted the fact that there is no possible way to see everything at PAX, so I’m not going to run around like a madman trying. Some big news has come out of the event so far, so I thought we would take a look at some of the highlights.
Even More PAX is in the Works!
That’s right. Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, the creative force behind the Penny Arcade comic and founders of the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), announced during the opening event at the Paramount Theater that PAX Prime would be extended to four days (Friday to Monday) starting next year. But that wasn’t all. A new annual PAX event is also coming to Australia! They explained that the extended PAX plans are part of an effort to meet the wild demand for PAX (passes sell out ridiculously fast). More PAX is good news in my book.
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Revealed
Some of the most eye-popping news to come out of PAX so far is the reveal of Konami‘s Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes by gaming legend Hideo Kojima, whom was attending his first PAX ever to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear series. Ground Zeroes is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5. The nearly 11 minutes of footage that Kojima showed off is absolutely stunning! Snake is coming back in a BIG way. Check it out for yourself.
The War Z
Zombie properties keep shambling out in horde-like numbers, and The War Z developer Hammerpoint Interactive is ready to throw its follow-up to The Day Z into the survival horror fray, but MMO style. Check out some gameplay footage below.
Want even more zombies? Ubisoft debuted a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming Wii U offering, ZombiU. This trailer should give curious fans a better idea of how the Wii U’s touch-screen controller will be integrated into gameplay.
I told you last week that Brian Michael Bendis was making an exception to his retirement from conventions to make a special appearance at PAX this year, so surely Marvel would have some new gaming stuff to show off. Sure enough, mighty Marvel showed off the latest trailer for Marvel Heroes featuring Daredevil. Comic-loving gamers rejoice!
Unless you count the unsurprising news of Wil Wheaton being mobbed by fans and playing some tabletop games with a few lucky ones, that’s the PAX news for now. Provided we don’t pass away due to exhaustion or end up stuck in a long queue for the rest of our natural lives, we will bring you more news as trailers get uploaded and it become available. PAX Prime is always an awesome event, and this year is no exception. A special shout-out/thank you is in order to Avery Alix of PopCap Games, for hosting another EPIC Pre-PAX Party on Thursday night and extending an invitation to us. Much fun was had by all (though I must admit, attending the first day of PAX on minimal sleep wasn’t quite as fun as you might think, but completely worth it). One more special shout-out to LTD Art Gallery who is currently hosting an amazing art show inspired by video games titled “PRESS START” just a few blocks up the hill from the Convention Center. If you are in town for PAX, definitely try to make it up to check it out.
