NYCC: Marvel Launches War of Heroes for iOS and Android

Comic Booked Guest Writer 10/18/2012 News, Reviews

Marvel launched War of Heroes, their card-based strategy game, for both iOS and Android phones.

Banking on the success of The Avengers, War of Heroes lets players step into the role of Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, fighting evil under the tutelage of Black Widow.  Players recruit Marvel characters, fuse cards to build stronger teammates and develop teams that play to character strong points – all to defeat evil through an original storyline created just for the War of Heroes game.

War of Heroes promises evolving gameplay in both single and multiplayer versions: team statistics change based on members (collect Avengers, for example, for a different kind of attack than an X-Men heavy team) and individual characters level up based on the number of their cards collected.

War of Heroes is accessible and engaging to both die-hard Marvel fans and newbies alike.  Players don’t need to know the ins, outs and 60 years of history for each character (though, that helps in setting up team attacks).  The platform itself makes sense, even if you’re not familiar with card-based strategy games.  And, everything is better for the artwork – all original artwork created for War of Heroes by noted Marvel artists like Sana Takeda.

The War of Heroes universe currently houses about 200 major Marvel characters with plans to release more in waves.  The team behind War of Heroes wants more than an obsessive two-week play through, instead aiming for an ever-expanding universe that holds player attention.  Based on response in early release markets, War of Heroes does just that – players have already developed Wikis and message boards to discuss character building, leveling up and gaming strategy.

The best part of Marvel: War of Heroes, though?  Free to play.  Not “free to play… up to this level.”  Not “free to play… for the first two weeks.”  Just free to play.  Marvel wants this gaming experience to be about the fans and for the fans – so snag War of Heroes now, prepare to get lost in the ever-expanding universe tonight.

Yeah, even after playing for a few minutes at NYCC, I can see that it's going to be majorly addictive – that's why I'm waiting to jump into it… I have things I need to get done this weekend. :)
