The summer of 2012 isn’t going to be big, it’s going to be huge in terms of blockbuster movies. To be more specific-Comic related multi-million dollar franchises. There’s Joss Whedon’s epic The Avengers along with Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises and also a new beginning with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Following NYCC, The Avengers were everywhere with a brand new record breaking trailer along with massive coverage at the con gave everyone a good idea of what to expect when it hits the screens on May 4, 2012. But the Batman and Spidey movies remained ultra-super-mega top secret. Yes, there have been teaser trailers and posters that bear both the bat symbol and the spider symbol. We’ve seen Spider-Man in costume and we’ve gotten a glimpse of Bane but nothing substantial. This week we get a little more.
Christopher Nolan had a special screening of the films prologue in an IMAX theater- which Nolan insists is the only way to truly experience his movie. The first seven minutes of the film are centered on Tom Hardy’s Bane and you can catch it yourself if you happen to live near one of the select IMAX theaters that will be showing it at the beginning of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol which hits theaters on December 16th. Nolan also left us with a black and white teaser poster that does not imply ascension like the title of the film. What we get is Bane with his back to us in the rain walking away from Batman’s crushed cowl. A very dark image that includes the tag line, “The Legend Ends”. Could it be that Nolan is going to break the Bat on his way out? He’s gone on record saying that Tom Hardy’s Bane will steal the film in much the same way Heath Ledger’s Joker did in The Dark Knight. The poster with it’s stark black and white images of defeat don’t make me believe that anything good is going to be happening in Gotham City in the summer of 2012 but we’ll see on July 20th.
The Amazing Spider-Man also released a new teaser poster. In concept, it’s a pretty cool idea. You can see it here. Spidey sitting in an elevated corner with a light source from above causing him to cast a shadow that is the spider symbol-in black and white. The tag line on this reads, “The Untold Story”. OK-Batman being broken and being the night and all that I get the black and white imagery. With Spider-Man? Especially a re-imagining (I am really starting to dislike that word) of a fresh faced Peter Parker’s origin? Just sayin’, the name Spider-Man sets off the blue and red sensors in my brain yet in the poster- nothing. I’m sorry that’s not entirely true, the release date is in red. At least The Dark Knight Rises slapped the name of the movie on the poster. I’m stumped at why they chose to give us this black and white picture of a guy casting a spider-shadow instead of something with a little more POP! That’s right-it needs more flair, I said it. My biggest concern about the poster is how it reflects what we may see on the screen. To get exactly what I’m talking about check out my friend Emmet O’Cuana’s article concerning the “darker” tone movies have taken. The first images I saw for The Amazing Spider-Man were bursting with color, which they should because Spider-Man is a colorful character. This poster leads one to believe the director is going for a dark and brooding Spidey. I think Batman is gonna have the market cornered on dark and brooding. Spider-Man was supposed to be a fun summer movie. I pray they just dropped the ball with the poster. Still it’s a cool idea but I woulda loved some color- if for no other reason than to assure me that Spider-Man was in the right hands. We’ll have to wait till July 3, 2012 to find out.
Bottom line, The Dark Knight Rises poster got me psyched up for another intense Dark Knight movie- the last!-so a big thumbs up for that one. I can’t wait to see this flick. The Amazing Spider-Man poster didn’t really do it for me, in fact it left me questioning if this re-imagining is a good idea at all so a big thumbs down on that poster. Don’t get me wrong I am excited about both movies but The Amazing Spider-Man is going to have to do a lot more to convince me that it is going to be as good as the hype.
