A few more titles in DC’s new 52 will be cancelled in January, leaving the slot open for a few new books to bring the count back up to 52. Those we know being cancelled are:
- Blue Beetle
- Legion Lost
- Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.
We also know that in February, a new Justice League of America title will be launched. That still leaves a small gap.. DC previously announced a new title - Threshold – which will be more of a sci-fi based series originating from the Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual as well as the finale of the aforementioned Blue Beetle. This title is helmed by Keith Giffen and Tom Raney, so my belief is that this series will be good. The cosmic element will also return in full force, and bring back classic characters like the Omega Men.
This morning, DC announced two of the other series to be launched in February: Vibe and Katana, both members of the new Justice League of America team. Don’t know these characters that well?
Vibe was a member of the Justice League during their Detroit era. He was a member of the team made of some other unknowns – Steel, Vixen and Gypsy – and long-time members Elongated Man, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman. Vibe was killed off during the end of that era. He was never seen again until Blackest Night, where he was raised as an undead Black Lantern to torment JLA members. With this relaunch of the character, it is fair to assume that there are even more glaring holes as to how/what Blackest Night impacted the DCU when there were not as many heroes to raise and torment. But I digress… We don’t know if this is the same Vibe as before – real name Paco Ramone – or if this is a new character with the same moniker. We will find out in February when Vibe launches, written by Andrew Kreisberg (co-creator of the Arrow TV series), co-plotted by Geoff Johns (Justice League), and art by Pete Woods (Legion Lost).
Katana has been around the DCU for a while, being a founding member of the Outsiders in the old DCU and being a central player in the new DCU so far within Birds of Prey. She will now become a member of this new Justice League of America team. This title will be written by Ann Nocenti (Catwoman, Green Arrow) with artwork by Alex Sanchez (JSA Classified). As shown already in Birds of Prey, Katana is a woman whose husband was killed and she firmly believes that his soul lives on within the sword that she carries. I assume that this means that this title will focus somewhat on that personal component of the character, as there is a strong back-story waiting to be told there.
But wait – Ann Nocenti is doing another New 52 title? Nope. With her taking on Katana, there is yet another creative changeup going on. Ann will be leaving Green Arrow as a result (why can’t Ollie get a break and a consistent creative team?) and will instead now be helmed by Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Justice League Dark) and Andrea Sorrentino (I, Vampire). Now this sounds like a Green Arrow that is going to be a new twist, as Lemire seems to be going for the darker characters. With the potential of the new Arrow series, this book could be trying to do a pseudo-parallel. And, since Ollie is going to be a member of the new JLA, why not give him a fresh start with the team?
Last, but not least, is the new Justice League of America title in February. (This is a busy month, isn’t it?) This book, which was previously announced by Comic Booked, will also launch that month. We knew this. What we didn’t know: There will be 52 variant covers of the title. These covers will represent all 50 states of the union, as well as an additional cover for each of Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
So with all of this DC news, are you excited? Are these must-have titles for you? What do you think of the Green Arrow changes, and which of the JLA covers will you be picking up?
