Marvel Comics Sneaky Preview: Daredevil #1
Mark Waid’s Daredevil almost instantly seemed like a turning point for Marvel Comics. After a decade of trying to keep everyone toeing the party line, Waid was at the vanguard of successful runs redefining iconic characters through a personal lens. With Marvel NOW!, they seemingly reinvented the way they told stories to let creators push their properties in fascinating new directions, and I’ll always love Daredevil for helping lead the way. But people also often forget that Waid’s Daredevil is pretty consistently one of the best books on the shelves, and while its sales have been slipping, its quality has, by and large, not.
With the onset of the All-New Marvel NOW!, it seemed like a fine time to take Daredevil in a fresh new direction – but who would be taking him there? Shortly after announcing the relaunch, Marvel confirmed that Waid, along with frequent collaborator on the title Chris Samnee, would be staying on. While on the one hand, the constant relaunches Marvel goes through can be exhausting and confusing (Ed Brubaker wrote two different Captain America #1′s and a Captain America #600 over seven years – make sense of that, mathematicians!), on the other, it does bring new eyes to flagging titles. And a title as good as Waid’s Daredevil deserves that renewed interest.
After the massive life changes brought on by Waid in Daredevil #36, Matt Murdock’s life is broken. Finally taking the idea that has haunted the title since Bendis’ earliest days – Murdock’s identity as Daredevil becoming publicly known – to its conclusion, he has been disbarred in New York. He has not, however, been disbarred in California, where he lived for over a year in the 70s, so Murdock is making the trek to San Francisco to try and rebuild his life. San Francisco is a great fit for the lighter visual palette that has so dominated Waid’s run (thanks to his fantastic artistic collaborators), and the change of locale should be interesting for one of the most thoroughly New York heroes out there.
