Marvel is spending more money than ever on marketing. They have some big comics on the horizon, and need to make sure that the books are a success. Will radio do it? No quite sure, but what will do it is the formidable talent they’ve assembled to pull off this mega-launch.
Breaking Comic Book News…
‘Turn up those dials because Marvel NOW! is hitting the airwaves as Marvel Entertainment is pleased to announce nationwide radio advertising in support of the blockbuster new launches hitting throughout this year and next! Exciting new radio spots for Uncanny Avengers, Deadpool, Fantastic Four, All-New X-Men,Indestructible Hulk, Thor: God of Thunder, Captain America and more will be featured nationwide during top programs including “Fox Sports”, “Jim Rome,” “Nikki Sixx”, “Petros & Money” & “Opie & Anthony”.
“We’re excited to bring Marvel NOW! to millions of new readers nationwide through advertising during the biggest radio programs,” explained David Gabriel, SVP Sales, Marvel Entertainment. “We’re spending more money on comic book marketing than ever in Marvel’s history to make sure that, in addition to publicity with major media outlets and top comic sites, there’s a strong mass consumer awareness of all our great new launches, from Uncanny Avengers to All New X-Men toSuperior Spider-Man.”
With Marvel’s continued commitment to reaching fans new and lapsed, this Marvel NOW! will be sure to reach more fans than ever before!”
More cool comics. New, exciting ways to reach out to the masses. It’s a good time to be a comic book fan. The amount of creative energy out there is spectacular. There may be mixed feelings about hearing your favorite Marvel superhero on the radio. We feel like it’s a great move, and it’s better than 99% of the crap on the radio now.
What impresses us most is the amount of time and effort comic book companies are putting into getting the word out. Fans are loyal. Devoted. Totally obsessed at times. So many fans will have their weekly pull list up to par, regardless of whether they hear Uncanny X-Men on the radio. The great companies out there realize that you can never have too many fans. Without them, there would be nothing. No Snikts or SMASH. Game Over. The diehards will be there to keep the market moving, but only for a time. What about the next generation? They need more ways to find out about our industry, and it needs to happen today. The amount of information a person consumes every day is extraordinary. People want their entertainment, and they want it now. Just think about all the devices you currently use. If you’re not quite there yet, we commend you. If only there was a shutoff switch. Who knows? Maybe that day will come.
Until then, get out there and buy some comic books. Read something awesome. Stop into a comic shop. Check out the amazing digital apps that are out there. It’s a great way to go back and read a ton of old books, or to keep the pulse on the current titles. Regardless of what you choose, there is so much good going on in the comic book industry, and we’re happy to be a part of it. Last, but certainly not least, SUPPORT INDIE COMICS. It’s the Right Thing to Do…

Radio is still king! this is a great idea!
Marvel on the radio….good times!
I cant say I really listen to the radio except when Im forced to by forgetting my own mp3 collection. I sure as heck do not listen to commercials anymore. Soon as they on im flipping somewhere else or turning down the volume. Im surprised at the shows listed above as I just do not see those listeners being a great target for comics. I hope it does well as more comic customers is a good thing. The above just seem like odd choices.
I listen to the radio a lot, I love some AM talk radio and there are still some stations in Portland, OR that I listen to online.
But something like this is long overdue. Also advertising in other magazines and venues that advertise in comics all the time.
The best form of advertising for comics has really always been the fans, sadly, though, publishers like Marvel and DC have put less into established fans in favor of 'new readers' who simply do not exist. If they would concentrate of giving fans stories and art that we could get behind then we would be more eager to share this stuff with non-readers. DC screwed their universe up with the New 52, love it or hate it, it's hard as hell to explain what's going on to people who don't read DC because you always go back to the Original DC and then try to figure out what still happened and what didn't.
Marvel has moved further away from being a Comic Book company and has become a company that publishes pitches for movies and TV shows. Marvel NOW! has been less than stellar so far and with everything starting over from #1 (in Captain America's case for the 7th time) it's hard to keep established readers when we figure what's the point in getting into a series like Fantastic Four when it's just going to get another 'Final Issue' and then another #1 in a few months.
Catering to people who don't care about comics isn't the way to go. Give readers something to rave about and see how many new readers come in.
Advertising like this will help some but you have to give us readers something to latch on to as well.
I'll be listening for it! Sounds cool!
The only radio I listen to is sports talk radio, you never know where your audience might potentially be!
Great idea! Can't wait to hear one!
It sounds great in theory, but not being in the US I think Marvel may be missing a number of other markets that could benefit from such marketing. The US is definitely a large market and may make up a large chunk of the sales profits, but increasing readership in other countries could go a long way as well!
Wow, this is interesting. What a new way for people to learn about comics! I wonder how this will change the industry…
I'm not sure how I feel about this idea…it seems logical, but I just don't listen to the radio much these days. I believe airing their ads on internet radio stations such as Pandora would be more ideal. I'm glad Marvel is branching out with their advertising though!
