March 2013 Solicitations: Marvel

Skott Jimenez 12/16/2012 Reviews

Well, let’s take a look at some of the March 2013 solicitations coming from Marvel. As with the Dark Horse solicits column, we’ll be looking at a selection of books recommended by our contributors instead of simply posting everything with no fun stuff going with it.

As always, let us know what you think about this new feature and we’ll continue to do what we can to make it better each month!

So, Marvel begins it’s first Marvel NOW! era event and while it may not be picked up by everyone, considering it’s 10 issues at $3.99 each and there are 3 issues coming out in March alone, it’s certainly worth spotlighting so let’s look at…

Age Of Ultron Age Of Ultron

After conquering the Phalanx and the Kree Empire in Annihilation: Conquest, it’s hard for me to imagine that taking over Earth will be a big deal. But… this might be entertaining at the very least especially considering how long it’s been teased. I’ll at least get the first issue and see what it’s about before deciding if I want to go along for the ride or wait for the trades. -Skott Jimenez

Superior Spider-Man #6ASuperior Spider-Man
CHRISTOS GAGE (W) • Dexter Soy (A)
Cover by Marco Checchetto
The Superior Spider-Man enters the Age of Ultron!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

I will probably be getting this anyway if I’m collecting the Superior Spider-Man series. It’s hard to say if I will be because the first issue of this book hasn’t come out yet. But what’s with the number? Does this mean we’ll be getting a regular series #6 AND a crossover issue #6 this month? -Skott Jimenez

Also part of Age of Ultron:

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Guardians of The Galaxy Guardians Of The Galaxy

I really love the Marvel Cosmic books. I know they hate that term but it’s a cool term and not as insulting as ‘Kid Loki’ or as stupid as referring to comics as ‘floppies.’ I do love these cosmic books though and with very few exceptions I’ve enjoyed them all. Even though I’m not at all happy with Iron Man being in this book… and the fact the only reason we’re getting this series at all is because some movie is coming out (which no doubt will impact the look and tone of the series because we have to aim this at people who don’t care about comics) it still has some of my favorite characters in it. I’ll be getting the first issue and hoping it’s as good as it has always been! -Skott Jimenez

NOVA #2
JEPH LOEB (W) • ED MCGUINNESS (A)
Variant Cover by J. SCOTT CAMPBELL
• A boy, a helmet, and an intergalactic legacy!
• Sam Alexander isn’t just any 15-year old, he’s just been recruited to the Nova Corps: the Universe’s police force.
• What do you get when you pair a raccoon, a green alien lady and a scared teenager? An amazingly awesome origin tale!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Nova Nova

A teen Nova. I am really not sure what to make of this. I already don’t like him after reading the Point One book that came out some time back but I’m hoping there will be some explanation on how Star Lord and Thanos are back but Richard Rider is still dead. The only reason I’ll get this, provided I don’t like the first issue, is because Rocket Raccoon and Gamora are in it. I’m willing to give this kid a chance but it’s going to be a small one. -Skott Jimenez

YOUNG AVENGERS #3
KIERON GILLEN (W) • JAMIE MCKELVIE (A/C)
Variant cover by TRADD MOORE
• A Fight scene, probably.
• And another one, but this time in a club.
• Plentiful feels. (aka “Meaningful emotional character beats” for people who aren’t on tumblr)
• The fakest ID in history.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

 Young Avengers

Kieron Gillen and Loki. How can you NOT want to read this? Also, let’s stop calling him Kid Loki, he isn’t a teen sidekick. Plus it just sounds stupid. I certainly plan to get the first issue of this and most likely will stick with it because of the two reasons I’ve mentioned plus the fact it’s got a $2.99 price tag, makes it easier to commit to a new title, especially a team book where I’m only really familiar with one character. -Skott Jimenez

AVENGERS ARENA #6
DENNIS HOPELESS (W) • KEV WALKER (A)
Cover by MICHAEL DEL MUNDO
Variant Cover by JORGE MOLINA
• Betrayal! Secrets! Murder! Shock follows shock in the stunning conclusion to our first story arc!
• Who will win the race to the supplies…and what are they willing to do get there first?
• Who is not what they seem…and which player will draw first blood?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

The first issue was shaky at best, I’ll be covering it in more detail in this week’s Bullet Reviews, but again, $2.99 is an easy price to handle plus there are two characters here I’m familiar with: Cammie from the Annihilation event and my long time fave: Darkhawk! I figure I’ll be able to deal with all the other characters I know nothing about and might stick around until my characters either die or escape (and if Darkhawk dies I’m going to riot) -Skott Jimenez

32 PGS. (EACH)/Rated T+ …$3.99 (EACH)

I like the new look and the direction Dan Slott is taking this franchise interest me. I’ve fully enjoyed all his work on Amazing Spider-Man so I have confidence that despite a title I’m not crazy about that I’ll be able to enjoy this book and the ride! I hope the double shipping doesn’t last for long though, I’m needing money for food as well! -Skott Jimenez

MORBIUS: THE LIVING VAMPIRE #3Morbius
JOE KEATINGE (W) • RICHARD ELSON (A)
Cover by DAVID LOPEZ
Variant Cover by TOMM COKER
• The hot new new horror book continues!
• Morbius gets closer to two people who don’t know the dark, deadly secret he carries.
• How does a fugitive remain hidden if his face is everywhere?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

I’m not entirely sure about this one. I’m as big a fan of Marvel Horror as I am of Marvel Cosmic but I don’t really think Morbius can carry his own book for very long. We’ve already seen that the current crop of writers and artists can’t handle Marvel horror icons like Ghost Rider and Man-Thing, I don’t think Morbius will fare any better but there’s that price point again and my love of the character will at least get me to buy the first issue. Will I be sticking around? Well, that all depends on how true to the character’s origin and history they stay. -Skott Jimenez

I love this series. No, wait… I LOVE this series! I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to stick with it after the big change of creative team AND headlining character but Immonen has made a believe of me and I’ve enjoyed her first issue just as much as I enjoyed Gillen’s Loki run on this series. I have no doubt that I will be with this book for the long run, I only wish more people would check it out, especially with everyone claiming there aren’t enough female characters and creators in comics these days. This book has BOTH and they rock like you wouldn’t believe! -Skott Jimenez

The price might be a sticky point but this is one of the 2099 books that I enjoyed most of. The part of the series collected here was, in my opinion, the high point of the line. After this it was all downhill until the line of books were put to rest. But even with the unimpressive ending, these characters seem to have some lasting power. Spider-Man 2099 is as popular as he’s ever been, this book is coming out, and I’ve got to wonder if maybe Ghost Rider 2099 will get a collection soon… -Skott Jimenez

About The Author

I've been collecting comic books for over 20 years, over that time I've learned a lot about the history of the industry and that fascinates me so I'm always looking for new sources of information. If it's about comic books then I'm interested.

Really looking forward to Morbius and Nova… Here's to hoping I'm not the only one (and they don't get unfairly prematurely cancelled, like most Marvel titles I tend to enjoy).
