Magic The Gathering Toolbox App released

Magic The Gathering Toolbox App released

At the strike of twelve last night, the wonderful people at Wizards of the Coast blessed us with a free app. Appropriately titled the Magic The Gathering Toolbox, it is a one-man army that will handle all of your card-flipping needs.  This looks to be the most comprehensive Magic App that’s free at the moment, as the amount of features it rolls out with is jaw-dropping.

Life Tracker

This alone could make the app worth it. I played a couple multi-player Commander/EDH matches this past Monday and one of the guys must’ve spent an hour trying to find an app that handled MTG Toolbox Life Trackerlife that didn’t look like absolute trash, and failed. He ended up settling for a vanilla four person tracker, after being disappointed that the prettiest one he found (that had a monkey!) didn’t do multi-player. The Toolbox does up to six players on the iPhone (8 players on an iPad) and also has the added bonus of tracking poison counters, Commander damage among other features. Anyone who’s looked for a Magic app would have had to pay for these features in the past.

Card Search

Ever wondered if there was a card that fit certain criteria made? The Card Search feature will quickly address any such questions you may have. At the time of release, the card database will have every card ever printed from the beginning of the game to present (over 10 years’ worth of cards!) stored. Having this kind of resource at your MTG Toolbox Deck Builderfingertips is a deckbuilder’s dream. Being able to specify which format the card you’re searching for is eligible for is the nail in the coffin. I’m sold.

Deck Builder

I love deck building, maybe even more than I love playing. I’ll whip out the latest incarnation of whatever I’m working on and goldfish until the images of the best starting hands get burned onto my retinas. I’ll repeated this process over and over and do whatever I can to eliminate cards that aren’t synergistic to the rest of the deck until I’m able to take it to play against other people. You can see why this feature will have such an impact. Like the card search, all cards made thus far in the game’s production will be accessible in the deck builder, though it’s been mentioned that a “small fee” will be charged to update the library with any future sets. As long as that “small fee” isn’t more than 99 cents per set, I’m all for it.. Mmm.. $1.99 even, but anymore than that would be impractical in my opinion.

Article Reader

It doesn’t stop folks, Wizards went in on this app and pulled out all the stops, and have even included an easy way to read their articles on the go.MTG Toolbox Card Search

Combined with a “Randomizer’, which does dice rolls and coin flips, The Magic The Gathering Toolbox is all you need and more. Now that’s Customer Service!

This blows any and all other Magic apps out of the water. The only reason NOT to have this app is not having an Apple device, as the app is exclusive to iTunes for now. An Android version is in development and will be released soon.

Boo to no Android app yet. Reason #278273 for an iphone.

    • Indeed. The Apps gap between iphone and android.. sigh. Don’t even get me started on that sweet iPhone camera…

  2. What about those of us that use Blackberry? We always left as last guy to be picked for Dodgeball.
