NYCC was this past weekend, and of course that means that lots of comic news was unleashed upon the world. But NYCC also had its fair share of gaming news as well, and even some hybrid comic/gaming news. Let’s take a look at some of the bigger stories to come out of this event in a special NYCC Edition of “Level Up” Gaming News!
Injustice: Gods Among Us Expands Its Roster
Attendees at NYCC got some hands-on time with the latest build of Netherrelm Studios’ Injustice: Gods Among Us. While many of the demo characters (Batman, Superman, etc.) have been on display since E3, NYCC players were happy to find a couple of new characters this time around, specifically Catwoman and Green Arrow. Netherrealm’s representative wasn’t willing to indulge speculation about how many characters (or which additional ones) might make their way into the final game, so for now we’ll just leave you with the screenshot below.
What? You want more? Okay, here’s the Official Green Arrow Reveal Trailer too.
Marvel, Marvel, and More Marvel NYCC Gaming News
I reported on some Marvel social and mobile gaming news (Avengers Initiative and Marvel: Avengers Alliance) early in the convention here, but it turns out they were just getting started.
Another X-men character will be joining Deadpool in his upcoming third-person shooter video game from High Moon Studios—Domino! Here’s some concept art.
A new “Game Features Trailer” also emerged for the upcoming MMORPG from Gazillion Entertainment for Marvel Heroes, submitted below for your consideration.
Zen Studios announced standalone “Civil War” table DLC for Marvel Pinball, and coincidentally, there’s also a trailer for it.
Dark Horse Comics Announces a Plethora of Video Game Related Comic Projects
Dark Horse Comics has always had a good working relationship with video game properties, and it turns out they have even more projects in store. We were the first site to bring you an exclusive first look at the cover art for the upcoming Mass Effect Library Edition collection, but it turns out this was just one piece of Dark Horse/Mass Effect NYCC news.
A new Mass Effect one-shot digital comic, Blasto: Eternity is Forever will also be released by Dark Horse on November 7th, 2012. This comic will be written by the games’ lead writer, Mac Walters, with art by Omar Francia.
Dark Horse will be following up their previous Dragon Age comic work with a new miniseries, Dragon Age: Until We Sleep. Until We Sleep will follow Dragon Age: Origins hero, King Alistair, expanding on the game’s already rich canon. Until We Sleep is due to hit comic shops on March 27th, 2013.
Dark Horse doesn’t stop there when it comes to Dragon Age. They will also be releasing the first volume of their Dragon Age encyclopedia, Dragon Age: World of Thedas, on April 3rd, 2013. Dark Horse describes this project as:
Invitingly designed and illustrated with hundreds of pieces of lush art from the creators of the games, this is the definitive guide to BioWare’s dark fantasy masterpiece!
For Dragon Age newcomers, this comprehensive volume brings you up to speed on everything you need to know about Dragon Age’s regions, religions, monsters, magic, and more!
For dedicated fans, never before have the secrets of BioWare’s epic fantasy have been revealed so completely and so compellingly. The World of Thedas Volume 1 is filled to the brim with never-before-seen art by the creators of the games!
This dramatic, accessible, beautiful tome illuminates the world from the darkest corners of the Deep Roads to the most illusory reaches of the Fade, taking readers on a journey through one of the most fully realized fantasy universes of our time!
And Dark Horse still wasn’t done! The hits keep coming with the announcement that they will publish a four-issue miniseries for the upcoming Naughty Dog game, The Last of Us. In the prequel comic The Last of Us: American Dreams, fans will get some backstory on the game’s teenage hero, Elle. I am elated about The Last of Us game, so this comic will be on my pull list for sure.
Devil May Cry
Shifting gears from the comic/gaming hybrid news, Capcom released a pretty badass new trailer for Devil May Cry at NYCC that is worth a look. Check it out below.
Darkstalkers might not be as popular as some of the other fighting games out there, but it was still a cult hit with many gamers (me included). So I was excited to see that Capcom announced Darkstalkers Resurrection at NYCC, for release on Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade–remastered and in HD. It too, has a trailer.
World of Warcraft Tribute
Udon Entertainment is releasing a World of Warcraft Tribute book, collecting professional and fan art (maybe even yours) inspired by the popular game. Starting on November 1st, artists from around the world are invited to submit their work (click here for complete info). This project is officially licensed by Activision-Blizzard, and the book will debut at SDCC 2013.
As this NYCC Edition of “Level Up” Gaming News is getting pretty long, we’ll leave it off here for now. Look for even more NYCC gaming and comic news from our ten writers who attended the convention, and are back, exhausted, and currently writing their little hearts out. I know we have some first hand Epic Mickey 2 news up, and lots more as well! Check out the rest of the site for all kinds of NYCC news, and thank you for reading. Happy gaming to you and yours.
