Kickstarter Spotlight – Julie Kagawa’s Iron King

cover of Iron King

Julie Kagawa is a New York Times best selling author. She’s been a fan of comics and manga for years, so it was one her dreams to finally turn her popular young adult novel series, Iron Fey into a comic series. The novel series as already spawned 3 sequels and a anthology, so there’s a rich universe she’s created with a large fan base. These are the best kind of projects because it brings in readers that read novels into comics. There are very few comics that are geared toward young females and this is one of them.  She enlisted the help of Bluewater productions and artist Frederico DeLuca to help bring her vision into illustrated form.

Creating a comic is expensive, so she decided to go the route that so many creators have over the years; Kickstarter. For those not familiar with what Kickstarter is, it’s a crowdfunding site.  Anyone can pledge money for certain rewards that the creators are offering. For many it has been a great way for comic creators to help fund their projects.

So what is the Iron King comic about?  For those not familiar with the Iron Fey series here is a little run down on what the comic series will be about. Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series. The story follows the adventures of a young girl named Meghan Chase.  On her sixteenth birthday she discovers her little brother has been kidnapped by a faery race known as the “Fey” and into their realm called the “Nevernever.”  Meghan has to venture into their world to rescue her brother where more adventures follow.

Julie and her team of creators know all the risks and challenges in producing a comic series. Here is what she had to say on the subject-

Julie Kagawa-

We understand that circumstances out of our control may occur. It is always possible that printing and manufacturing can be delayed, product can get lost in the shipping process, or sometimes those pesky human errors may cause something to get lost in the shuffle. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to create an iron-clad system to cater to Kickstarter backers. Each person receives a PHYSICAL file folder that backs up our digital, we keep a record of what has been sent, what is pending, and any problems that arise so we may correct them as quickly as possible. We’re in this for the long haul, and  we want you back for many more campaigns in the future. Because, hey, that only happens if you’re happy with how this one goes!

Check out all the great rewards these creators are giving out. If you like the art and premise be sure to pledge.  Even a single dollar helps. Even if you can’t pledge try to like the Kickstarter page on Facebook and other social networking site.
