The company behind both ad campaigns seemed to realize how well the viral approach worked. If you keep up with the major comic book companies at all, you’ve probably seen the newest vague images Marvel has been releasing over the past week or so. The images display a varying slogan against a black background with colored mist flowing through the void, along with the words “December 2013″ and the Marvel logo.
This particular advertisement almost looks like it could be a public service announcement regarding STDs, but Marvel doesn’t exactly have any eggs in that basket at the moment. This isn’t the only image, of course, and the others are just as indistinct, sporting slogans such as “Is He…? Be Vigilant,” and “Are They…? See Something? Say Something.” Speculation and discussion about just what these messages could mean have been widespread over the past few days, but all Marvel has had to offer is the teaser posters.
It’s no surprise that many people think the colored vapors in the background of the images could be Terrigen Mist, which would correlate with the slogan’s McCarthyist witch-hunt vibe – the mist has the ability to give mutant abilities to ordinary humans. This could mean new characters and new powers in the Marvel Universe, but whether it’s Terrigen Mist or not, these images make it clear that big things are in store for Marvel.
