The first issue of the multi-reality event has been released at long last! Infestation 2, the follow up to IDW’s 2011 event which became the sleeper hit of the year, continues the story begun in that event, which featured zombies, and the Infestation: Outbreak storyline which introduced aliens and demons to the IDW mix. Infestation 2 raises the bar, considerably, however. The Elder Gods have escaped from their prison and are launching some sort of attack on the IDW-verse as well as the realities that are homes to Transformers: Hearts Of Steel, Dungeons & Dragons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe and 30 Days Of Night.
The IDW branch of this has the C.V.O., a group of vampires (demons and other fun beings) who face off against monsters of the unknown, trying to figure out what’s going on with the sudden appearance of giant, multi-eyed worms, slime, monsters and such popping up all over the place. Naturally there is little information to go on, but some members are able to get hints that this is something bigger than zombies and aliens. The resident C.V.O. demon even admits that these are things that even demons fear.
Here’s the lowdown: While the Elder Gods have escaped from their prison, they are still outside of our time/space realm and are trying to break through and take over. To do this they will need a piece of the man who introduced them to the general population: Howard Phillips Lovecraft. When he died a tumor of sorts was removed from his body and kept by the organization called Oblivion, which is charged with keeping the Elder Gods out of our reality.
The Gods need the tumor to make a solid connection to this reality and they will stop at nothing to get it including ripping a portal of sorts into the chest of one of C.V.O’s most powerful agents!
So, without giving away much more on this issue I have to say that THIS is how you start an event! This is the sort of thing we used to get from ‘The Big Two’ during the summer. There is a sense of ‘how do we defeat this evil?’ and since these events actually have long lasting impacts on certain characters and even the other franchises they touch on (a recent issue of GhostBusters referenced Infestation and Zombie Stay-Puft) it raises the ‘anything can happen’ bar here.
The first issue is a perfect set-up. You get a quick back story, which is the same as the Secrets of Infestation 2 Ashcan released months ago, then we begin to see the effects of the ‘jail break’ and things begin to rapidly go south for our vampire heroes. The best part is those in the field fighting these things have no idea what they are or how serious the threat is. For me that always adds a special flavor to these type of events. Especially in this one because you really don’t know ‘who will survive and what will be left of them’ I mean, sure, Snake Eyes isn’t going to die, neither are any of the Turtles, but that doesn’t mean they will escape without major scars!
Plus, unlike a certain ‘fearful’ event from last year, this one actually has me eagerly awaiting the coming issues.
IDW has done it again, showing the industry that they are a major player and they can, in fact, play on the level of Marvel and DC. They may not have the library of characters the other two have but they certainly know how to use the characters they have and tell a tale with edge-of-your-seat action.
If you missed last year’s Infestation then you have a second chance right now! Don’t wait for the trade on this one, this story is best served in weekly installments!
