Fans of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible rejoice! This fall, Kirkman’s Skybound imprint of Image Comics will launch Guarding the Globe. Guarding the Globe will follow the Kirkman-created team Guardians of the Globe and focus on the struggles of keeping the planet safe in Invincible’s absence.

Guarding the Globe‘s writing duties will be handled by Phil Hester and art will be executed by Todd Nauck. While Kirkman may not be writing this new series, it is certainly not because of a lack of enthusiasm. In a press release from Image Invincible Comics, Kirkman was quoted as saying “The Invincible Universe has outgrown its parent title and I’m very excited about being able to tell larger, more in depth stories with some of the key players from that book in this series. Phil Hester and Todd Nauck are well known to fans of superhero comics and I think people are fully aware that they’re going to knock this book out of the park.” The duo will make their debut in the Guarding the Globe story in Image’s Free Comic Book Day special. Nauck was quoted by U.S.A. Today as saying the Free Comic Book Day issue would act like a “tidy little bridge” between the new ongoing and the 2010 mini series of the same name. Those of you who read the original mini will be glad to learn that the surviving members of the Guardians of the Globe will be returning, including (but not limited to!) The Invulnerable Brit, Knockout, Monstergirl and Best Tiger. Nauck went on to say that while the events that take place in Invincible will certainly effect what happens in Guarding the Globe, one does not have to be intimately familiar with the ‘Kirkman-verse’ in order to understand what is going on.

Guardians of the Galaxy

With a such a huge and unique cast of characters and a creative team like Hester and Nauck, Guarding the Globe will be a welcome alternative to The Avengers and Justice League for many fans. If you’re a fan of superhero comics, make sure you pick up Image’s contribution to Free Comic Book Day and check out Guarding the Globe. I mean, why not? Its free!

While the actual ongoing doesn’t debut until September, make sure you keep an eye out for it in your local comic shop or in our digital shop!
