IDW’s Infestation 2 Is Coming!

Skott Jimenez 11/18/2011 Reviews

Infestation is returning to the IDW Publishing multi-verse with Infestation 2, beginning in January 2012 and running through April.

Fans of the first Infestation will know some of what to expect: a massive threat that begins in the regular IDW Universe, inhabited by C.V.O. (featured in the first Infestation). The threat won’t be contained to this reality and will reach out to other realities and will affect the lives of characters such as the Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more!

So, what is Infestation 2? Well, during a press conference earlier today, IDW Publisher Chris Ryall and Editor Bobby Curnow explain that the big bad this time around is Lovecraftian in origin: big monsters, lots of tentacles.

The structure is just like the original, although Ryall made certain to express that you don’t need to have read the original Infestation or the follow up, Infestation: Outbreak, to fully understand what’s going on here.  So, what books can we expect for Round Two?

The story will begin January 25, 2012 with INFESTATION 2 #1 by Duane Swierczynski  and David Messina. It will feature 2 covers, one by Messina and another by Alex Garner (both of the Infestation books end titles will feature 2 covers). This is where the fun begins as the stage is set and the threat is introduced. Where does it come from? More importantly, how does it escape into the other realities?

February 1 and 15 will have the releases of the INFESTATION 2: TRANSFORMERS books. These will be written by Chuck Dixon with art and covers by Guido Guidi and will take place in the Hearts Of Steel continuity established in the 2006 series of the same name. Ryall announced that the Hearts Of Steel trade, which had been out of print for a while, will be offered again through Previews so readers can get an idea of what the Hearts Of Steel world is about. Curnow mentions some “fun historic characters” interacting with the Transformers and comes up with the best tag line for these books: “If you’ve ever wanted to see a steampunk version of Optimus Prime fight a giant monster, this is the place.”

February 8 and 22 brings INFESTATION 2: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS into the mix. Not only will this be the first time D&D has been a part of this sort of event, it will also be the first time the Eberron campaign will be seen in comics! These books will be written by Paul Crilley with art by Valerio Schiti and covers by Menton Matthews. I have to admit, I’m curious about this. I’ve never been a D&D guy but I’m familiar enough with it to be interested in how Infestation will impact this reality!

2012 is a Leap Year so to take advantage of an extra week in February, IDW plans to have a bit of fun with the event concept and give readers a breather as well. INFESTATION TEAM-UP, released on February 29, will be written by Ryall himself with art by Alan Robinson and cover art by Godzilla’s Eric Powell. This book will feature characters from GROOM LAKE and Bat Boy from WEEKLY WORLD NEWS as they meet in a bar while Infestation is happening outside and talk of things event related. Done purely for fun it’s Ryall’s way of  “letting off of steam as this bigger, more important event is going on.” It’s got Bat Boy and an Alien in a bar. What more do you need?

After a quick breather we jump right back in with INFESTATION 2: TMNT on March 7 and 21. Written by Tristan Jones with art by Mark Torres and covers by Livio Ramondelli this will, according to Curnow, have “a really great horror vibe” taking the Turtles deep into the sewers to investigate the mysterious disappearances of city workers and others. How will Ninja Turtles handle monsters of a Lovercraftian origin? We will have to wait to see!

March 14 and 28 sees the releases of both parts of INFESTATION 2: G.I. JOE by Mike Raicht and Valentine De Landro who is also providing the covers. Raicht returns to G.I. Joe to take them through another Infestation and he’s bringing Storm Shadow, Crystal Ball and Interrogator along for the ride. Cobra makes a terrifying discovery and tries to use the madness to it’s advantage!

April 4 see the release of another one shot: INFESTATION 2: 30 DAYS OF NIGHT by Duane Swierczynski and Stuart Sayger takes place in the North Pole and puts the 30 Days vampires in a situation where they have to face off against something even more evil than they are!

Then the madness wraps up on April 11 with INFESTATION 2 #2 and we see who survives and some promised surprises!

One of the things mentioned for this event is unlike the previous Infestation where the characters were contained to their own realities, this time we will be seeing some of these characters meet! Who will meet whom? Will they get along and, more importantly, will they remember meeting?

Also, as part of an incentive program, stores that order 25 books will also receive 25 temporary tattoos, much like the patches offered with the first event.

Did someone mention variant covers? Well, no event would be complete without them and this one has a very unique take on it. Each book with have a ‘tentacle’ variant which will feature the characters drawn by the respective books artist with long tentacles sliding across them connecting the covers into one big image!  I for one, can’t wait for this event to begin.

About The Author

I've been collecting comic books for over 20 years, over that time I've learned a lot about the history of the industry and that fascinates me so I'm always looking for new sources of information. If it's about comic books then I'm interested.

Great job, exciting news…I was wondering if you were going to be able to fit in all the awesome artwork. Now THIS I can't wait for.

Artwork like this I would fit one way or another. These covers are fantastic!

I asked if they would consider something like a series of oversized prints of these covers (imagine these on your wall!) and Chris Ryall did say that was something they would consider!!

I'm looking forward to covering this!

These comic books are great! They should work on making infestation planet of the apes!

Great comics! Got all of them in one day—read them in 2 sittings.

It was really good. The first and last issues weren't all that great. I've never read anything published by IDW before, but the bulk of the comics were really good.

I was really disappointed though. I thought that, in the last issue, the universes would cross over—especially after reading this article. They didn't. The end was kind of lame. I feel like everything was setting up for something, and just left us hanging. I dunno, not happy about that.

On the flip side, for the first time, I've enjoyed GI Joe. Meanwhile, I got an amazing two issue arc for 4 amazing series, and 2 great one-shots. 10/12 is a good number.

I was thinking the same thing. IDW did imply that some of these characters would be meeting towards the end, which would have been the 30 Days Of Night or Infestation 2 #2.

Unless they were referring to the Team-Up…

    "Sound and fury, signifying nothing."

English translation: INFESTATION 2 waa over-hyped crock!

Not only did none of the stores I frequent carry anything past the first two issues. The store owners never even heard of INFESTATION 1!

    • Skott Jimenez 10/16/2012 at 11:54 am

Perhaps the store owners should pay more attention as to what is going on? With high profile characters like Transformers and G.I. Joe involved the news and announcements for these events was pretty much every where.

My LCS sold out of a few of the second events books.

Both were highly entertaining, a few misses but what event doesn't have a few misfires? But having collected and read both of them, I can say they were both a lot of fun and more than a few surprises as to which parts were really good!
