Danielle Gelehrter created the persona of Penny Dreadful the witch in an effort to revive the concept of a horror movie host on Boston-area television. Horror movie show Penny Dreadful’s Shilling Shockers premiered on local cable in January 2006. Shilling Shockers first aired on cable access television in Providence, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; New Bedford, Massachusetts; and Salem, Massachusetts. It eventually spread to over 150 cities and towns throughout the six New England states.
The names “Penny Dreadful” and “Shilling Shockers” are both derived from 19th-century serialized tales of terror, crime and the supernatural.
The Penny Dreadful witch persona is described on the program’s website as “an intermingling of light and dark elements. She can be very silly and sinister by turns, with a withering wit and a dramatic gaze.” Penny is fond of using the exclamation, “Hex-Cellent!” and refers to her viewers as her “Dreary Ones.”
Penny Dreadful won the first Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards for “Favorite Horror Host” in 2007, she also won the award again in 2010 , making her the first horror host to win the award twice in the category.
This year Penny Dreadful will be releasing her first comic book entitled “Penny Dreadful’s Cauldron Of Terror” that will feature Penny as the narrator of the comic and she will also appear in some of the comic book stories herself; the comic will have the feel of the classic EC comics such as “Tales From The Crypt” and “Witching Hour” with that special mixture of humor and creepiness that only Penny Dreadful can bring to both her show and the comic book.
The comic book will feature artwork from Scattered Comics Studios artist Josh Barker who will be drawing “Sprite Fright” and freelance artist Frankie B. Washington will be drawing “Puppy Love” a story in which will tell the origin of how Penny and her werewolf husband Garou first met and fell in love; the comic book will be published by Comic Book Divas.
Penny Dreadful and Garou will be guests at Free Comic Book Day this year at Harrison’s Comics in Salem, Massachusetts; this will be Penny and Garou’s very first appearance at Free Comic Book Day! They will be on hand to talk to their fans about what is in store for the new season of Shilling Shockers and about the upcoming comic book and they will be signing prints including a “Penny Dreadful Cauldron Of Terror” print by Josh Barker and Penny will also be signing copies of the “Dreadful Hallowgreen Special”
Be sure to stop by Harrison’s Comics May 7th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and hang out with Hex-Cellent Penny Dreadful and Garou.
