Guy Gardener Green Lantern of Sector 2814

This part 2 to Green Lantern 101 where today I will tell the origin of the second of Earths Green Lanterns.

Guy Gardner is the second man from Earth to hold the mantel of Green Lantern, it was revealed later on after his introduction that there were two men chosen to wield the power ring of Green Lantern after Abin Surs crash, one was Hal Jordan and the other Guy Gardener. Jordan being the closest in proximity was officially chosen, while Gardner was relegated to the duty of being Hal Jordan’s backup if anything were to happen to him.

As such Gardner at times helped Jordan out on his missions, at one point Guy was struck by a bus trying to save a students life and was then was re-placed as Jordan’s backup by John Stewart. After his recovery Gardner was doing his duties as a backup Green Lantern when Jordan’s power battery exploded in his face causing him to be pulled into the Phantom Zone for sometime. After his release from the Phantom Zone Gardner was diagnosed with brain damage and comatose for a number of years.

During the Crisis on Infinite Earths Gardner was revived  by renegade Guardians with a new cocky attitude and mindset that he was the one true Green Lantern. Gardner was  to recruit the most powerful villains in the universe to stop the destroy the Anti-Monitor at all costs. He was stopped by Hal Jordan and John Stewart because if had succeeded it would have meant the end of the universe. Placed in incarceration after the incident Hal Jordan pleaded for Gardner’s release and won Gardner his freedom.

Gardner was taken to be taught what it meant to be a Green Lantern, something he was not fond of, he escaped was caught and later on stripped of his Lantern ring only gaining it back after the execution of Sinestro, which resulted in a majority of the Corps losing their rings. Guy Gardner was one of the few Lanterns left with the ability to wield a ring, and was brought in to re-place Hal Jordan as a the Green Lantern of Sector of 2814 while Jordan looked to recruit new Lanterns. When Hal returned to retake his rightful place Gardner challenged him to a fight loser had to leave the Corps, Gardner lost and gave back his ring.

Later on Guy Gardner tasked himself with getting the yellow ring from Qward, when it was said the ring never returned Gardner found it still on the hand of Sinestro, and took it. The ring was powered by the Green Lanterns using their rings against him, which he found out accidentally when a Lantern member attacked him when his ring had no charge. After finding out about his Vuldarian ancestry Gardner found a cup that would allow him to access those powers. He drank from it and gained the ability to shift his body into different types of weapons, he then took the codename Warrior and became a superhero once more.

During the series Green Lantern: Rebirth Guy Gardner was stripped of his Vuldarian powers and once again given a Lantern ring, although at the time Parallax was controlling him and the other Lanterns. They soon all broke free and defeated Parallax and Guy along with the rest of Earths Green Lanterns stayed on and have all been a part of the massive battles that have ensued.

As of now Green Lantern Gardner has been seen in dealings with ex-Guardian and newly dubbed Green Lantern Ganthet, and the Red Lantern Guardian Atrocitus. We’ll see what’s going on there.
