Green Arrow is back with another incredible issue by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. I was afraid that the duo wouldn’t be able to keep the momentum built up in the previous issue going but they managed to blow my expectations out of the water.
Like the previous issue, this one starts up with a glimpse into Oliver’s future as he’s wandering through the Arizona desert. Near death he looks to be giving up. The focus shifts onto the present as we see Oliver readjusting from last issue’s cliff hanger. Low on supplies and wanted for murder, Oliver is having a pretty bad day. This issue follows the emerald archer has he looks for new allies. It was really fun to see the Justice League of America mentioned in this issue and Green Arrow’s relationship with them. The tone of the book is fairly serious but Lemire manages to add some humor in this issue and it’s a nice break from the moodiness of the story.
While the book does have Green Arrow printed largely on the cover, this issue spends a good amount of time looking into the character Komodo and my oh my, I can’t wait to learn more about this guy. He’s a better hunter than Green Arrow and has the finesse of Bruce Wayne when it comes to business. Not only that, but he has a very interesting relationship with his daughter that I look forward to seeing develop.
When I reviewed Green Arrow #17 I mentioned that Andrea Sorrentino’s art seemed out-of-place for this series. It looked more fit for a horror book like he was doing with I, Vampire, but I must say that his art is growing on me. There is a heavy amount of detail in this issue and it shines on every panel. Not only that, but the black and white panels with green highlights are back. YAY. But Sorrentino manages to add more black and white panels with red highlights this time around, no doubt in relation to Komodo. These panels are amazing and I still want to see an entire issue done in this fashion. But while Sorrentino’s art IS growing on me, there were a few panels with Oliver Queen in which he looked incredibly young. I know the concept of the New 52 was to bring back a young DC, but some of these images make Oliver look like he’s a teenager.
The story progresses pretty significantly in this issue and while Lemire is moving pretty quickly there still manages to be a fair amount of mystery revolving this story. I have more questions now than I did last month and I can bet come April I’ll be pulling my hair out. Despite some art discrepancies, this series is still delivering on its promises.
