In this episode we review George A. Romero’s Empire of the Dead #1 – Spoiler free until the video!
We were very hyped for this comic simply based on the fact that George A. Romaro is the author. The zombie king himself writes this issue with Alex Maleev (Daredevil: End of Days cover’s/Batman: the Dark Knight) as the artist.
This issue, to be completely honest wasn’t as good as we hoped. It is very sad to admit this, but truthfully this is how we felt.
Let’s start with the story. The world set feels cool. Society isn’t in ruin and people have pretty much accepted the new life style of zombies. Not to say things are completely okay, but things seem pretty well controlled, so much in fact that people have gladiator style fights with the zombies. The world established by Mr. Romero is fine, nothing insane or special.
The art works very well with the tone of the comic thanks to Mr. Maleev. His scratchy and raw art style fits perfectly in this world of zombies. The real problem we had with the issue is that we feel that zombies are becoming very boring. It certainly doesn’t help that there is already a Marvel zombie book out right now that so far isn’t bad (Night of the Living Deadpool). Also what doesn’t help is that the story seems to be borrowing off some ideas from the comic Extinction Parade.
All and all this issue wasn’t bad, but it failed to live up to the hype that is George A. Romaro. The comic just doesn’t stand out in a time full of zombie culture which truly made us sad.
