The penultimate issue of Suicide Squad is one of many mixed emotions for both the characters appearing within its pages as well as its loyal readers. Matt Kindt does his best to tell as much story as humanly possible in just a few short pages, but he does so with such grace that, even though the overall product seems a tad rushed, it’s still fun, fresh, and exciting. And the guest artwork from Jim Fern is pretty great, considering this was my first exposure to the creator. Taking place right where we left off last issue, they don’t waste a single frame.
The Thinker is trying desperately to young would-be hero, Kevin Kho from the O. M. A. C. suit. Amanda Waller just ordered Deadshot to “inject” everyone on the Suicide Squad with her magic bullet that gives them temporarily augmented abilities. And the more heroic members of this crazy-go-nuts cast just seem sort of out of place, for the most part. They are trying to kill the Thinker, but save Kevin, even though they are currently sharing the same body technically. Which is hard for even stable people to understand. So a few battles and one so-dumb-it’s-clever insult (O. M. A. C. and cheese), Waller walks the kid through regaining control of the armor, at the cost of (maybe) King Shark. All in all, it looks like it’s going to be a somewhat happy ending when Captain Boomerang, ever the idiot, misses the memo and knocks Kevin into the porthole. So Waller has now lost another innocent life on her watch. Actually, when you think about it, she pretty much aided his murder.
Oh, yeah. And the “magic bullet” that Floyd shot everyone with? It placed nanobombs back into the teammates. Waller forgot to mention that part. So she’s going to need to rebuild not only her team morale, but their home base as well. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next issue, what with Forever Evil: A. R. G. U. S. ending and potential paths of Steve Trevor and his team crossing with our own fan-favorite forced-to-reform villains. Either way, it’s going to be a fun final issue. For now. Plus, we’ll get a Waller one-shot that will no doubt serve as a coda to the series. And then the inevitable relaunch…
