First Look: Avenging Spider-Man #17

Nick Furious 02/01/2013 Reviews

Avenging Spider-Man is essentially the new Spider-Man team-up book.   It pits Spider-Man with a threat he can only (or has to face) with an ally of some sort.  But with Doc Ock being the new Spider-Man so far he has proved he doesn’t need anybody’s help to take out the scum in New York, so why exactly is this title still going?   I love Chris Yost as much as the next guy but if we are really gonna make this guy “Superior” there is absolutely no need for team-ups, especially with the Future Foundation!  Here is the official press release:

The FF Get Superior In AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #17!

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Avenging Spider-Man #17 from the red-hot creative team of Chris Yost & Paco Medina! The Superior Spider-Man is forced to work with the FF as the literal future comes crashing in on them, threating to destroy the Foundation itself and expose Spider-Man’s ultimate secret! Can Spider-Man play nice with the kids of the Future Foundation while keeping the future at bay? Find out this February in Avenging Spider-Man #17!

Even though he's pretending to be Peter, do we really see Doc Ock putting up with the FF here? Maybe if Franklin were there so he could try to manipulate him… but otherwise, no.

Soooo aparently "Superior” Spider-Man isn't superior after all. No seriously, I don't think Avenging Spider-Man will be any fun with Ock in Pete's body. It just doesn't sound appealing knowing that this Spider-Man will be having a whacky adventure or two with people who should generally see through the facade.

This sounds terrible. Which is too bad, because Spider-Man is one of (if not THE) best characters in Marvel's arsenal of awesome characters. And Christopher Yost is a very talented writer. Stupid Dan Slott ruining my childhood one book/character at a time.

I trust Dan Slott. I see the man as an innovator. If he thinks this is a good idea it will be a good idea. I hated Brand New Day but I loved everything that followed.
