Fall Television Preview: NCIS

NCIS on CBS

One of television’s most watched action-dramas, NCIS, returns tonight to CBS.

The show follows a team of investigators assigned to the Naval Criminal Investigation Service. Led by Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the team takes a serious tone from the leadership. Gibbs is a no-nonsense former marine that runs a seemingly tight ship.

His second in command is Tony DiNozzo, played brilliantly by Michael Weatherly. Not nearly as serious as Gibbs, DiNozzo tends to catch the ire of his boss. Gibbs has grown to trust DiNozzo’s instincts over the years. The duo brings a dynamic to the team that works surprisingly well.

The male fans of NCIS will tell you not to dismiss Pauley Perrette as Abby Sciuto. The geeky and quirky forensics expert has captured the attention of a very large fan base. While many debate their favorite characters on the show, Abby tends to lead those debates.

The supporting cast, including David McCallum as Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard, Sean Murray as Tim McGee and Brian Dietzen as Assistant Medical Examiner Jimmy Palmer, round out the show very well. The acting truly sets the show apart. From supporting cast to the lead characters, the show is very well constructed.

The new season opens in a big way. While the show centers around NCIS as a unit, very seldom do we get to see the group in a true military background. From the preview, we see part of the group involved in an attack on the helicopter they are in. This leads to some views of the team in the field showing off survival techniques and instinct. It also gives the obligatory concerned Abby scene.

The new season is starting with a bang. Can NCIS keep the pace up throughout Season 12?
