DC Comics New 52: Free Issue #1

Crimson Blur 08/04/2011 Reviews

As a huge Superman fan, you have to choose your battles wisely. A lot of people get let down, while others tend to see things in a more lenient, but different light. The cover of this comic is no exception. When I saw those funky farm boots and Oliver-Twist-Style-pants, I knew I was going to be pretty disappointed with the Superman reboot. As a fan of Superman: Earth One, I always wished they would just start over with that story.

To my surprise, this wasn’t about Superman at all. This is actually just a DC freebie to show off their new art and stories. The previews were excellent and they intrigue me more and more every time I read them.

They gave great promotional images with brief descriptions for Justice League, Justice League International (Booster Gold is the leader?), Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, The Fury of Firestorm, Captain Atom, Green Arrow, The Savage Hawkman, DC Universe Presents, Mister Terrific, Action Comics(This is where Superman will make his debut), Superman, Supergirl, Superboy, Batman, Detective Comics, Batwoman, Batman: The Dark Knight, Batman and Robin, Batwing, Batgirl, Nightwing, Catwoman, Birds Of Prey, Red Hood and The Outlaws, Green Lantern(Sinestro is on the cover), Green Lantern Corps, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Red Lanterns, Justice League Dark, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., I, Vampire, Resurrection Man, Demon Knights, Stormwatch,Voodoo, Grifter, Suicide Squad, DeathStroke, All-Star Western, O.M.A.C., Blackhawks, Men Of War, Teen Titans, Static Shock, Hawk and Dove, Blue Beetle, Legion Lost, and Legion of Superheroes. WOO! What a list!

Ok, now onto the Justice League #1 excerpt!

It starts out with Gotham PD chasing after Batman who is chasing some bandaged and ugly green monster. Batman gets the upper hand and shoots his grapple hook through the monster’s leg and they are both taken down by a massive, red explosion. After some hand to hand combat an intensely strong green light blinds the battling opponents.

The next frame shows that the green light we saw was in the shape of a fire truck. Batman looks up to see a man in green and black.

Green Lantern- “Batman? You’re real?”

Batman- “And you’re too damned bright. Turn down the light before they see us.”

Green Lantern- “Before who sees us?”

Gotham PD- “PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!”

I personally believe this is how the Justice League will get started. Once Bruce and Hal are together, they’ll have the power and the resources to find all of the other heroes that are necessary in completing the team. Some characters will just be known and myths while others are known as vigilantes, but together they’ll be known as heroes.

And for the Hal Jordan fans-It was so hard for me to find a solid picture of Hal in his “New 52″ costume. If you guys are having the same problem, let me help you out!

From a non-DCer, I have to say this issue made me excited to delve in!

As a long-time DC fan and more of a Superman fan, this is by far, the WORST-looking reboot EVER! WTF!!!!

The suit sucks, And, and the idea of erasing it's history, messing up Clark and Lois's relationship, and it decreases of what Superman stands for and decreases less of Superman's humanity and even cancelling JSA, this reboot all because of, everything's going to be f*****' ruined and Dan Didio's ignoring how we feel about it and as a long-time fan,I know whats right and whats wrong and this is a bad way to do business and what really pisses me off is that the green of man would sell the DC mythos and thats not right!

And this is ALL Dan Didio's fault, sadly and without him, we wouldn't be in this situation and now I heard that if this reboot fails, their they won't publish Superman anymore, which is BULLS***! HOW IN GOD'S NAME CAN YOU RUN A DC COMICS BUSINESS WITHOUT SUPERMAN?? YOU CAN'T!!!!!!!

DC COMICS, DAN DIDIO, LISTEN TO US, STOP IGNORING AND GIVE US BACK OR ORIGINAL SUPERMAN AND DC UNIVERSE!!!!!!!

Well Anthony, the only constant in life…is change. I'm going to give it a shot and I think I'm going to like it! But who knows, I'm just going to have a little faith in DC and I bet they'll deliver.

But you have to be out of your mind if you think Clark's story is JUST being changed now. There have been so many different versions over the years. If you count TV, Movies, Alternate Universes, Secret Origins, etc. you'll know that his story has been edited for creative purposes multiple times. Times are changing, and so is Clark Kent.

Anthony, I agree. I am a huge Superman fan, but to me this is not Superman. Maybe a clone. in real life you can't just reboot the world. I think doing that is like trying to control the fans. We'll get the fans used to this life for a character , now I want to change it cuz I don't like it and the fans will have to change to the way I want.

DC has rebooted their movies so, much I am beginning to like Marvel movies better. That's sad since I have been a DC fan for over 40 years.
