DC Offers Bombshell Alternative Covers This June

David Vandervliet 03/17/2014 News

DC has been on an alternative cover tear lately. We had steampunk covers,  Robot Chicken covers, and May’s comics will have Batman ’66 inspired alternative covers by Madman artist Mike Alldred.  In June there will be Bombshells on DC’s comic covers!alternative covers

DC is drawing inspiration from its Bombshells statues, which were introduced back at the 2012 NYCC. The DC Collectibles line re-imagines some of the company’s more famous female characters as pinups from 1940s and ’50s. The covers, like the statues, are designed by artist Ant Lucia.

Who is Ant Lucia? According to his Facebook page,(which you should like) he “has worked in the field of Illustration and design for the past 12 years. He is  best known for his digitally illustrated series entitled ‘Spookshow Pinups’, a combination of classic monsters and their “cheesecake” pinup counterparts.”

Talking to USA Today, Lucia said “I’m so proud of the work we’ve accomplished on the Bombshell line and very excited to see them become part of the cover series; It has been a privilege to work with the team at DC Collectibles and watch these develop. Having my art on the cover of DC’s comic books has been a dream of mine since I was very young so this is particularly special to me.”

The statues have been some of my favorite pieces that DC Collectibles has come up with in a while.  Among the characters in the collection are Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Poison Ivy. Harley Quinn, Stargirl, Batgirl, Black Canary, and Zatanna. If I have the budget I would own all of them, but Black Canary is my favorite, so far.

We are sure to see all of these characters, plus a few more (Like the above Catwoman). If the covers are popular, maybe we will have some more Bombshell statues to look forward to.
