City of Heroes, the first ever Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game that features superheroes, is unfortunately shutting down. Yep, by 2013 fans of the popular MMORPG will no longer be able to create their own superhero and free-roam around a fictional city amongst other costumed heroes and heroines. Andy Belford, Community Manager at Paragon Studios, the studio responsible for City of Heroes, had this to say about this turn of events:
City of Heroes will be closing its doors by the end of the year due to a decision by parent company NCsoft. In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world’s first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks.
As sad as this news is, it is not unexpected. City of Heroes has been around for a very long time folks. Seriously, it predates DC Universe Online by nearly seven years, yes, seven years! But alas this widely popular superhero game has seen its final days and will go down in history as one of PC’s best superhero based games.
