Chris Evans Dons The Cap Suit For Avengers Shoot

The Avengers, the big-budget conglomeration of the Marvel films characters from the past couple of years, is currently shooting in Cleveland. Luckily, the spycams from Celebrity-Gossip.net were on site to catch the first glimpse of Chris Evans in his Avengers-style Captain America suit.

There are a lot of interesting differences between this new suit and the one Evans wore in Captain America: The First Avenger. Notably, the newer suit looks more like it has thicker body armor than the makeshift, utilitarian suit from the 1940s. All of the extraneous straps and pouches are gone, giving the new suit a very streamlined look. The helmet is also redesigned, making it a pull over mask than the chin-strap style helmet.

What made The First Avenger such a great movie is that it felt like a true period piece, right down to the Captain America suit. Since Cap’s no longer in the ’40s, they needed to update his costume. The new suit looks like a mash-up of the Bucky Captain America and the Ultimate Captain America. I can’t help but feel that having two different looks vying for dominance really takes away from the grandeur of the costume.

I really have to say I’m not a fan of the redesign. The top half of the suit just looks too bulky, like a padded Halloween costume rather than actual armor. The reflective strips across the shoulders also look goofy, like Cap’s biggest concern is safety when he goes jogging at night (strangely, that sounds like something Captain America would be concerned with). And there’s something going on with the mask that throws me off. It’s slightly smaller than the helmet, but other than that, looks exactly the same, making Chris Evan’s entire head look smaller.

The new wings look more spread out and vibrant, while the original wings were very static, making them look like a military symbol instead of something airbrushed on the side of the helmet. I preferred the military style wings.

Sure, the Cap suit looks a little clunky in the photos, but it’ll probably be amazing to watch on film. Honestly, I don’t know why I’m even bothering to nit-pick the costume. I can think of a million things I won’t like about The Avengers. But I loved all of the movies so far, and with Joss Whedon at the helm, I’ll probably wind up sitting in the theater, open-mouthed with wonder throughout the entire thing.

The Avengers is due in theaters May 4, 2012.

What do you think about the new suit? Are you happy with the overhaul or would you prefer a style similar to the previous version? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. I have to agree that it does look clunky. But when put through a camera lens and all its filter, then all the post production work that’s done, it will probably come out looking badass.

It’s like the Spider-Man suit. Every time I see shots from the set in any of the movies, the suit always looks stupid. But on the film: badass!

You’re absolutely right. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the silver taping around the shoulders and up his legs are some kind of motion capture either that won;t even appear on screen. Early pictures of anything really do some justice. I’m pass my criticisms once I see the final movie.

  2. I personally think it looks great! I’m really excited it looks as good as it does!

  3. lol I actually like it Mike. The shoulder reflectors are silly, but the rest looks pretty accurate to how I remember him. I always prefer to go more comic-booky as opposed to realistic. I still haven’t seen The First Avenger but I saw the photos of his costume and it seemed more realistic much in the same way Batman’s newer costume does in the Nolan franchise.
