Captain America #1 Breaks Records

Captain America #1 Breaks Records

I have bid on comic books from eBay, Heritage Auctions, ComicConnect, and ComicLink. I have not yet had the luxury to purchase through Metropolis Collectibles, which is a sister company to Comicconnect.com. There are so many good places to find a great many books, and someone just found a copy of Captain America #1 in a 7.5 condition. This 1941 Timely book, the company that became Marvel Comics, sold for $75,000.

That is a staggering price considering the last 7.0 copy sold back in 2003 at a whopping $20,600. Only six years later the book is now worth over 3x that amount. This Golden Age book is just the start because another copy is about to sell, this one at auction by ComicConnect.com. This is what they have to say about the book itself:

“One of the greatest Golden Age keys, this issue features the origin and first appearance of the most popular patriotic hero: Captain America! The issue also features the 1st appearance of Cap’s tragic sidekick Bucky, as well as his nemesis, The Red Skull! Thrill to the adventures of America’s greatest hero as told by the character’s creators, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. The cover sports one of the greatest images of the Golden Age, Captain America socking Hitler in the jaw.”

The Captain America #1 currently on auction at the time of this article is a CGC 9.2 which is from an original owner dubbed the Atlantic City Collection. And here you thought the only good thing to come out of Atlantic City was Salt Water Taffy.  Only one other copy is graded higher, which belongs to the Allentown Pedigree and is graded a 9.6. Can you imagine a comic book from 1941 looking like it was just purchased off the shelf?   The bidding on this beautiful gem closes 9-Aug-2011 and if you want it this future record breaking sales current bid is over $100,000.

I remember my parents once telling me to get rid of all my junk because it will never be worth anything. I kept my comic books but they never left.
